ambergrifleman,

A little history....

The original 45-70 "Gallery" cartridge was loaded with a round ball and only 5 grs. of black powder loaded loosely in the case. Velocity ran in the 500 f.p.s range. I have made replications of that load and with the powder positioned back against the primer, 50 yard groups ran 2" in a friends original Trapdoor Springfield.

THe original 45-70 "Armory" cartridge contained 20 grs of b.p. under a 240 - 250 gr bullet. The powder was also loaded loosely in the case. Velocity ran in the 800 f.p.s. range. Replication loads using a "bumped up" (.459" dia) 250 gr. 45 colt bullet grouped into 1 1/2" @ 50 yards.

Here's a pic of the various factory cartridges inluding a shot cartridge
The "Gallery" cartridge is on the left.

45-70 Round Ball/Collar Button Load

Size a 45-70 case for about an inch of neck and prime with large rifle primer and expand the neck so that a .457” to 0.460" RB / Collar Button / 210 Gallery Boolit will go into neck about the width of a normal wood pencil lead thickness. Put in 3.9 grains (Little Dandy rotor #5) of WW 231. Measure distance from case mouth to powder. Subtract from that distance 1/8”and the thickness of a foam 45 caliber wad cut from an egg carton. This gives you the distance from the case mouth to the top of the foam wad. Seat that foam wad over the powder to that distance. DO NOT PUT THE WAD ON THE POWDER FOR ANY REASON!!!!!!! The powder needs to make a slope between it and the wad and that distance is 1/8” minimum. VERY IMPORTANT!!!!!! This allows the powder to burn consistently and provide the accuracy wanted. The wad distance is from Charlie Dell’s book and it has worked fine for me for over 500 RB/CB/GB loads. Now that you have it charged, seat a .457” RB to a little over ½ depth / Collar Button to mid front band / Gallery boolit to mid front band and crimp. This arrangement shoots to my hunting sight zero to at least 50 yards and has killed many squirrels for me. I’m shooting it though a barrel of about 18 ½ to 20”.

recently i had a quirky thought about shooting roundballs wrapped in a cloth patch...[muzzleloader style]...loaded inside a 45-70 case. so i posted my wonderment and a couple others experimented as well as my own experiment. mine came with surprising results and i stopped experimenting as i found the combo that worked very well for the purposes i wanted out of them. these are the experiment targets in paperplate form...yep fancy all the way...

the load consisted of variase grains of goex 2f blackpowder as written on the fancy targets[[plates]]. these groups were very interesting and hardly any recoil to talk about. the ball diameter is .454 and the patch is .010. these worked so well out of my hunter hiwall that i will have some of these loaded with 45gr around from now on. dandy for my war on these troublesome squirls that attack my home thru the summer mounths.
