I'm really itching to get into .45/70 at some point and this looked like a good price. I just don't know much about this particular rifle. Any experiences, thoughts, or warnings?

Thanks.

I have one, shoots nice. The stock sight isn,t tall enough for long range work. I ordered the target sight from H&R.

I bought one, when they were first introduced - before they were issued with sights.

I installed a Lyman #17 Globe front and a Williams WGRS peep on the rear - but it kicked my butt good, with heavy boolit loads - since IMHO it's too light for any slugs over 350 grains.

YMMV, of course.

Hm, I saw the 32" bbl and figured recoil wouldn't be too much of a problem. Looked again when I saw this post and saw it's only 8lbs. That is kinda light.

I've shot a lot of 8mm out of a M48 and 7.62x54R out of both 91/30 and M44...I was assuming the recoil would be more on a rifle like this, but how much worse can it be?

You'll find out.

Recoil depends upon what you load it too. The H&R is a good strong action that can be safely loaded to scary levels. A 300 to 400 gr bullet moving at 1300 fps or under will not kick much worse than your rifles with full house GI loads. But if you load the round up to say firing a 500 gr slug at say 1850 fps you better have a recoil shield on your shoulder and even then you will not want to fire many rounds. I shoot a lot of 45-70s loaded with 500+ grain bullets using black powder. I can tell you from personal experience that firing 50 or 60 rounds in a day will not bother your shoulder much when shooting prone. However, When you go to the line the second day your shoulder will be tender and generate real pain without using a recoil shield. By the way a 535 gr bullet at 1150 fps in a 13 pound rifle feals a bit like a 338 Win mag in a 9.5 pound rifle when shooting prone.

Fill the hole in the buttstock with lead. You have lead, right? LOL
