They heavy barrel MKIII's are drilled and tapped from the factory and come with a Weaver style mount as sold new.

If it is not drilled and tapped nothing to worry about as some one makes a mount for Ruger semi auto handguns that fit in the rear sight dovetail and clamp around the barrel by the receiver. I had one on my Government model MK II when I owned it.

The clamp-on mount with red dot I have on a stainless .22/45 still allows use of iron sights.
If buying now, I'd get the newer MKIII version, because as stated above you get a mount with it and it ends up being considerably lighter than using the clamp on. The new .22/45 MKIII with the wood panels is NICE looking !

I have a heavy barrelled 22/45 and purchased a Weigand mount and it has worked extremely well for over 4 years now. I like the pre-MKIII 22/45 since they dont have the magazine disconnector .

I've got a MKIII 22/45, and like said above, it came drilled & tapped and the mount came with it. Mine handles everything well, with no jams yet. I haven't put a scope on it yet, and don't know if I will. I can hit what I want without a scope so far. There a nice gun, and easy to carry.

They come with a Weaver styled rail and are pre-tapped. You can buy them from Ruger or many other places.

If you want to get away from the magazine tap dance of the MK-III just get a Clark bushing. Takes about 10 minutes to change it over. Your mags will drop free then. Down on this page a little CLK-515-B or SS.

One other thing to consider. You mentioned a used 22/45. The MKIII is drilled and tapped and comes with a base, I don't think the older MKII was?

My MkII Target came d and t, and with the ruger base and ruger rings. On a used gun, you need to contact the seller and ask.

The 22/45 MKIIs were drilled & tapped. The Wiegand base requires removal of the rear sight, Rugers factory base as included with the MKIIIs doesn't. Still, the Wiegand is a much sturdier base and I prefer it greatly over the factory base my MKIII came with.
