My Gatling Gun is just about finished, will have it in Feb. 2007. I saw some WC-872 45-70 Duplex loads. I plan on using a cast .459 dia. 405 gr. bullet. The load I plan on using is the one that has 6 grs. of 4198 then 69 grs. of WC-972. The gun has 10 Stainless Steel barrels, 32 inches long.
I don't have a 45-70 rifle at the present to test the loads, but what I'm concerned about is the amount of powder residue that will be left in the barrels. I have an obscene amount of WC-872 and would like to use it up. But I don't want a load that will leave a lot of unburnt powder in the gun. The above load is around 1300 fps and that is ideal for the gun.
Any help about a good WC-872 load for the Gatling Gun with min. powder residue would be appreciated. Jon

Oly Cow! you will have to clean TEN barrels. :)

Have fun, sounds exciting.

I don't have a clue about the 872.

.................The point of using the duplex is to clean it ALL up. I found that in my MAS36 converted to 45-70 that 3.0grs of H4198 cleaned it all up. In other words it could not have been cleaner. I tested to 5.0 gr loads of 4198 only because I had loaded them, but obviously if 3.0grs cleaned it up, going to 5.0 couldn't do more then raise velocities further.

I believe Deputy Al uses 5.0grs in his Ruger #1, 45-70 and that is probably just 'Gun Differences'. I would suggest you start at 3.0grs and load to 5.0grs initially. If 3 does it then there ya go. If it takes 5.0 then you're still fine.

My current load for the Lee 405 plain base uses 6.0 grains of IMR-4198 underneath 46.0 grains of WC-860, and Federal #215 LR Mag primers. These are "clean" firings. I have no experience with WC-872, dunno if it's more dense in relative weight than the "860", but my load has 100% loading density with the boolit seated to 2.530" OAL. I'm getting 1873-level ballistics, ~1300 FPS.

HTH.

Sounds like it is a OK Load. Another question, with that load 6grs. 4198 & 69 grs. WC-872 and the length barrels (32") would I be getting much muzzle flash? I kinda hope I will, and as far as I'm concerned the more the merrier. Jon

Dunno about flash, I haven't fired any loads in low-light conditions to see it. I'll put that on the Fall 2006 To-Do List, as soon as deer season gets over. Of course, if the #1 and I get lucky at dawn or dusk, there might be an earlier answer.
