hello guys, i'm looking for a stock for a friend, and neither of us know which model it is, type 38 or type 99. he don't really care what it is, milsurp or aftermkt. i've found both online, i just need to know which one to get. i've never fooled with these rifles much, other than shooting them. i'd sure appeciate some advice. thanks.:)

What caliber? 7.7 or 6mm

The two arisaka rifles will require different stocks.
Doug is hitting it on the head, the easiest difference to note is the caliber:

Type 99 is a 7.7 mm
Type 38 is a 6 mm

However this web site has a good photo of the Kanji (Japanese writing) on the type 99, just below the "mum" :

so you can compare it to the rifle in question

it is a 7.7, so i guess that answers my question. thanks.

Izzyjoe,

Glad you got your question answered, but I need to correct someofthe info that was offered.

The type 99 was 7.7mm

The type 38 was 6.5mm NOT 6mm.

Every time I read about Arisaka rifles it bring to mind a song that I just can't get out of my head. I'm sure some of you guys have heard it.

It goes something like this:

Arisaka, Arisaka, Dorm-A-Vu, Dorm-A Vu, Cast De Freaken Boolits, Cast De Freaken Boolits, Bang-Bang-Bang, Bang-Bang-Bang.

Arisaka, Arisaka, Dorm-A-Vu, Dorm-A Vu, Cast De Freaken Boolits, Cast De Freaken Boolits, Bang-Bang-Bang, Bang-Bang-Bang.

Everybody Now! From the diaphram; sing it with me brothers.

Arisaka, Arisaka, Dorm-A-Vu, Dorm-A Vu, Cast De Freaken Boolits, Cast De Freaken Boolits, Bang-Bang-Bang, Bang-Bang-Bang.

OK, I'll stop now. No more coffee for me.

Don't worry too much Doug, I can't seem to hit the spacebar much of the time.

The original Japanese stocks were two piece, the toe of the butt was a different piece of wood and frequently very visually different. That may make a difference to you.
