I am curious about the cylinder length on the newest model of the Ruger Blackhawk in .357 magnum. I have a .41 magnum I purchased last year and the cylinder length is 1.674". I would like to know how much space I would have to shoot heavier boolits should I purchase one of these with a 61/2 inch barrel.

Thanks.

It sounds like you are going to convert the 357 to 41 mag? Can't says which but some 41cal boolits would be too long. Probably Keith type.

There are two types of new model frames for the 357. I'm guessing the new one you refer to is the medium frame. My old model 357 med frame cylinders run 1.60". Assuming your 41 mag is a new model and it's not recessed you have about .074 difference. Although knowing Ruger it wouldn't surprise me if the new model med frame cylinders are made different so they can't be interchanged.

I have a new model I bought back in the mid 80's . . . cylinder is 1.64 long.

Actually built in 1984.

Thanks. 1.64 sounds about right. I am actually thinking about picking up the plain jane blued model with a 6 1/2 inch barrel. I enjoy my .41, so thought it might be nice to have a similar .357, in case .41 mag. components got scarce in the future. Do I need one? No, but I would like to have one also to save my Smith 686 from a steady diet of the hot loads.

Thinking about buying the Ranch Dog 175 grain mold that RD says is coming out in May, wanted to know how much cylinder space I would have to spare. I don't suppose Ruger would be stupid enough to make them 1.590, but thought I would check.

Off topic, but does anyone know why Ranch Dog molds are made with the tumble lube design? I like the idea, because I have no desire to buy a luber/sizer, but wondered why RD chose to make that choice?

Thanks again.

So you're looking at getting an original large frame since the newest version doesn't come in 6 1/2".

Interestingly my SP101 has a 1.58 cyl, and the Sec Six has a 1.61 cyl . . .

Here is my New Model Blackhawk w/6.5" barrel & "friends".

I picked up a new Ruger Blackhawk in .357 magnum today, blued with a 6 1/2 inch barrel. In case anyone is wondering the cylinder length on the gun is 1.645". Thanks for all the responses.

I put 100 rounds .38 Special cast boolits through the Blackhawk today. I enjoy .38's in the Smith, but the Blackhawk needs a .357 gas-checked boolit.

Don't forget that you'll pick up about .060" more of cartridge overall length in your Blackhawk by virtue of its rim depth NOT being recessed into the cylinder face.

Good to remember, thanks.
