Do you think a large round nose like this bullet will be ok for a guide gun? I think yes but other opinions are welcome.

I don't have personal experience with the Ly457124 but I suspect you'd have a COL problem if you crimped it in the first groove. The Ly457193 would be a better choice IMO.

look at the rcbs boolit...i think it is the 45-350 or the 45-405 or the 45-500 moulds. these are great and i have and use the 500gr flat nose that seem custom for the marlins. my "sbl" gun shoots em like butter and they function thru the action very nicely. another thing i like about these rcbs moulds is that with the ww's i use they cast at around .460 to .4605 witch is just rite for the throate and bore of my marlin. i shoot em as cast with panlubing with the lyman supermoly. this is of course for smokless loads. those 500's if loaded up to snuffy will get your attention when trigger time is on. they should be the cats meow for hunting.

The bullet cycles through great. I am more concerned about a chain fire in the magazine.

Yes, those are the boolits that I too use mostly in my Marlin 1895CB, along with the little Ly457191, 292gr punkin' roller. Even the Ly457193 will just barely cycle thru and they won't if you're seated just a wee bit too long.

I have limited experience with it in a guide gun. Approximately 40 rounds and no chain fire. Accuracy was fair at best and since I got a mold from BRP that is a tack driver in my guide gun I dont load it any more.

That bullet is one of my all time favorite 45-70 bullets and has proved accurate out to 500 yards in more than one rifle. I have shot it in tube magazines and see nothing wrong with it as the nose is well rounded and with the softer alloys I generally use I am not concerned with chain fires. However, I mostly use an RCBS 45-325-F bullet in my Marlins as they shoot well and work well on pigs and deer which is mostly what I hunt with it.

I have no problem with a round nose in a tube magazine, look at how many round nose bullets the big bullet companies sell for 30-30.
I just don't see a need for a 500 gr bullet in a guide gun. A 425 Ranch Dog will do the same things and was made to fit in a Marlin. It will give you all the recoil you want, trust me. If it merely to say you have done it, then by all means do it. But for real world applications, why?

Thanks btroj, Bill and Nick! Presently I am shooting a Lee 405 FN in my gun, but I have this
457124 mold and was going to run a few to see how she shot them. I am not totally satisfied with the Lee mold, but I still have some work to do on loads for it. I might try that 425 Ranch Dog in the near future.

The Lyman 457124 throws a 385gr bullet.

Ok, got my Lyman number mixed up. That is a good bullet. I would think it would work well in a guide gun. I would have no trouble using it, except for hunting I prefer the flat nose bullets.
I have never heard anything bad about the RCBS 405 but I have never used them.
For an awesome 45-70 bullet look at the group buy for the 405 plain base. I have a similar bullet from a group buy a few years ago. It is a great shooter and with the big flat nose it is a great hunting bullet too.

I can understand this. I have just gotten that stage. My shoulder sure is happy with that too.
I have decided that my desire to feel recoil is the limiting factor in most 45-70 loads. A 350 at 1900 or a 420 at 1700 is about all I want anymore.
