Yes indeed, but the old girls can be a bit cranky about giving you velocity and accuracy at the same time. They seem to like fat bullets at least .266 or more and after that is when the fun begins. Some of the guys seem to have figured out how to get close to 2000fps with accuracy but that isn't so in my case. I was shooting approx. 1600-50 fps and was not getting anything even closely resembling a pattern, let alone a group. I adjusted my load to slow it down a bit and started to see results on the target. I eventually got to 8.5 - 9.5 grains of Unique with a dacron filler with velocities chrono'd at anywhere from 1275 to 1350(if my memory is still working) with a 130 .266 cast from an unknown brand mold . Accuracy was pretty good at 1" at 50 yds and still held 1 1/2" at 75-80 yds which is about all I can see anymore with open sights. I was very disappointed with the velocity but pls'd with the accuracy. I tried 10.0 grains of Unique with similar results but did have a flier that did not occur at 9.5. Therefore I decided 9.5 was going to be the max for this combo. I admit I never tried any of the slower rifle powders that seem to be in use today and perhaps that would have helped with the velocity/pressure issue. I simply used it as it was because I found it to be very pleasant, no recoil, limited muzzle blast and inexpensive to feed. It worked well on groundhogs, foxes and 1 deer that let me get a good shot at it, at 45yds. This question comes up once in a while and perhaps someone will have a quicker/accurate load for you to try. These Swede's are a blast to shoot but may not be the absolute best caliber for cast. No matter, have fun and good luck.

Ed, do a search for "swedish mauser" or "Karlina" here, you can spend, literally, days on end reading tons of good posts with a lot of good drama thrown in to keep you awake. Buckshot, Maven, Larry Gibson, Starmetal, PAT303, 45 2.1, are just a few names here to help narrow the search.

I found that on some boolits, I had to bump them up a bit to fit the throat, and the ones I have worked with all preferred air cooled boolits, to quenched.

I've used the 140 grain RCBS gas check bullet in my Swedes with excellent results. The powder that gave me the best accuracy was AA-1680....... 21.5 grains IIRC. Actually, almost any load of AA-1680 between 19.5 and 21.5 grains will do just fine.

The 140 grain Lyman 6.5mm bullet is also worth trying with the same loads as above.

EdZ KG6UTS,

Man, you will grow old reading all the Swede threads and posts. As to the drama -- why, it's much better than an old Alfred Hitchcock movie.

My 1901 M96 loves fat boolits, but can't make up her mind whether she prefers 2400 or IMR 4227. I have an experimental Trail Boss session on tap, but am not expecting stellar resullts.

CAUTION If you are over 50 you may not live long enough to digest all of the info on the wonderful Swede. And some have got her to throw the PB pills at about 2700. Have fun with your Swede.

Thanks a bunch! Right now my casting is just for my 45-70(NEI) and .43 Spanish (Lyman) but the Swede is a fun shooter so........why not pour a few.

Mines like that, regardless of powder it has always shot better with soft ACWW than quenched. Pat

Tell you what...
In the last few days reading the old "Swedish Mauser" - Karlina threads/posts has been a good learning experience. Fun Stuff especialy with mould numbers given!! I'll try to blend some of my .43 Spanish(Rolling Block) and.45-70 Sharps experience in there too.

Lyman 140 with 16.0 4198 and Dacron sized to .265 works in mine.
I just loaded some 4227 and have not shot any yet.

I have shot lots of AR2205(H4227) in mine and 18grns is my 100m load,it shoots inside the 10 ring of a 50m pistol target easily. Pat
