Can anyone tell me if it's practical to check barrel groove diameters with pin gages. I've got a five groove SMLE that's driving me nuts. I can't source a small V block and V anvil mic's are too expensive. Graingers sell them for about $2.60 each, so getting five or six to bracket rifle bores won't break the bank. Thanks.

Here's an article by Fermin Garza, he uses pin guages on revolvers http://www.gunblast.com/FerminGarza-Firelapping.htm

Pin gauges can check BORE size but not groove to groove so you will still need to know rifling depth.

Pin gauges can check BORE size but not groove to groove so you will still need to know rifling depth. I'm hoping to be able to do that with careful use of the end of my dial caliper.
P.S. You're right, I corrected my lead post to say "barrel groove" instead of "bore" diameter.
Barrel ''land'' would be more precise I guess. But I think everybody knows know what we mean.
