I just traded a buddy some of my boolits for a Mosin and would like to start casting for it to learn rifle casting. And, I'm planning on a Garand this summer.

I see that a Lyman 314299 is a vary popular Mosin mold, and 311299 is quite popular for the Garand. I'd love to size the bigger boolit down for the Garand, but I'm guessing it would not leave enough difference between the driving bands and the shank.

Am I right, or would it work? Sure would be nice to save a little on a mold, but I don't want it done crappy.

Should work fine. I actually size .310 for my Garands. I run the Lee 309-200, which is visually similar to the 311299. The bullets fall from the mold .310-.311.

For paper patch in my 300 Win Mag, I size them down to .306 without any issue at all.

HAving both the Lee 309-200 and the 311299, I'll say that the Lee bullet is no where NEAR a copy of the 311. Other than that they are both 200 gr .30 cals, they are quite different. Different nose profile, different number of grooves, different bullet entirely.

I like both though. :)

Sizing down .314s to .310s is not an issue. I do it all the time.

Great. Thanks guys.

I also know that 150 grain is the sweet spot for the Garand. Now I just need to find someone that doens't really want their NOE group buy mold that I missed out on!

Watch for small group buys, you only need 5 for them.

Heck, start a thread, I bet you can get at least five.

Shooting cast and j-words are two different entities for the Garand. Do a search, on Garand loads here, it should lead you to some of the Bob S loads. Also Larry Gibson has done the leg work on some loads as well.
I read for weeks before I even started thinking about reloading cast for the Garand. I dont relish the thought of an operating rod implanted into my skull.

Just take your time with the right boolit, and have fun.
