I have a ruger .338 win mag 1:10 twist iirc. I was playing around at mountain molds and can get a 300g bullet made. Is this reasonable? Has anyone made one, is there any loading data, is this stupid, how fast do you think I can push it?

Thanks,

Clutch

Not sure that the 338 is going to come into it's own with cast bullets? My favorite bullet is the Sierra 250 grain spitzer boat tail @ 2,800 fps. Great downrange energy retention and punch. 74 grains of Re-22 compressed load.

I was asked about this today except it was for use in a .338 Federal , down here
we have so I am told a large number of surpressed .338 Feds and the owners want to shoot 300 grain bullets in them,
I would be interested in any information on heavy .338 bullets.

Robert.

BRP has a 275gr boolit design. Might be too light for your wants. I have one of his 310gr in my 375 H&H and it shoots very well, around an inch @100yds.

I would think you could push a 300gr to around 2400fps. Recoil WILL be noticeable.

MM mold's design program will limit you on your ogive length. outdoorfan designed a mold for his whelen and has some knowledge about this.

Tom @ Accurate Molds may be a better route as he'll work just about anything for you.

+1 on rockrat's BRP statement. I have his 275 GC for my 375 H&H and it is golden.

It has been a LONG time since I played with a 338 Win Mag and castings, and I knew a whole lot less about making lead boolits work in rifles than I do know. My results back then weren't real spectacular--about 3" at 100 yards was as good as the Howa 1500 would do with the RCBS 200 grainer, and that was on a good day. It would print 250 grain Noslers or Sierras into 1.00" to 1.25"/5 shots very reliably, so I kinda threw in the towel after several months of disappointment and pistol-speed powders running boolits at 1300-1500 FPS. 3 prior 338s all shot j-words no worse than 1.5" @ 100 yards, as well.

If I had it to do over again, I would try no faster powder than Alliant 2400, and give some work to the 4895s while boosting the speeds into the 1700-1800 FPS ZIP Code. I would also be A LOT more cognizant of the rifle's throat dimensions--size the boolits accordingly--and be a lot more critical of boolit quality and tooling/boolit relationships than I was 15 years ago.

I consider the 338 Win Mag and the 375 H&H or be the best-balanced and most sensible belted magnum calibers ever birthed for North American large game hunting.

Something like this?

I'd like to try it in my 338 UltraCat.

It depends what your needs are in the .338 Win. Mag. BRP also makes a 250 gr. as well as a 230 and 200 gr. molds for the .338. Bruce at BRP is a vendor on the site, you might look him up and jaw with him for awhile and you might change your mind on the 300 gr. mold idea.Robert

I had Tom at AM (accurate moulds) draw up a 240gr boolit to use in my 338 wm and 338ME. He just put it on his site Saturday, I think. I sent my order in yesterday. ALMOST ordered a BRP 230gr but wanted a little more weight.

If I was only shooting my 338 win mag, I would have gone with the 250gr BRP.
