I am hoping to have my inaugural casting session tomorrow. I will be using a Lyman 452460 for use in my Fusion Commander. Planning to use a light load of Bullseye, maybe 3.5-4 grains.

What do you recommend for alloy? I have a lot of smelted WWs, lino and pure Pb. Echo suggested 2 lbs. lino/3 lbs. WWs, but if I can get away with less lino I'd like to conserve it.

What alloy do you guys use for such loads?

I'm new at casting, but much of what I've read is that 50/50 pure to WW is fine for .45 ACP at 850 fps or less? I'm curious too. I certainly hope that much lino to WW wouldn't be required! Those would have to be some pretty hard bullets...

I'm also planning to water quench unless there's some reason I shouldn't.

bcr,
I use the Lyman 452460 and bullseye powder also.
My "alloy is 50% range scrap and 50% lead. I'm using 3.6 grains of bullseye and the bullet is lubed w/ FWFL
This is a pretty low power target load and doesn't need to be too hard. I don't think water quenching is necesary. I don't have a hardness tester so I don't know hard my range scrap is but it seems softer than wheel weights. I would think if bullet "FIT" is right and C.O.L. feeds well, I think Paladin's suggestion of 50%WW/ 50%pure would work. You might even get away w/ a little less % of wheel weights
Good luck, jmsj

My go to alloy for all my handgun boolits is a homemade Lyman #2.
9# ww + 1# solder drippings. Some use straight WWs.
I shoot the 452460 in my 1911 at 850 or so FPS....dale

I have used straight ww in a 4 cavity 452460 for over 30 years. Powder is 4.0 gr. Bullseye. Sized 0.452 in Lyman sizer using whatever lube I could find cheapest. Fired maybe 15,000 such rounds in a Series 70 Gold Cup. No leading.
Just my opinion... There is no need to heat treat the bullets or add linotype.

OK, thanks guys. I think I'll try either straight WWs or 50/50 WWs/Pb and see how that goes.

I use straight WW with all pistol loads. If I need harder, I heat treat (which is rare), but for 45 air cooled is plenty.

I use 4.5gr Bullseye with this boolit.

With .45 target loads anything works, you're talking 700 fps and 10K PSI. I would use what you have the most of, I sure would not waste any lino there.

that alloy does sound a bit hard especially if you w/q

Straight WW metal should be fine for target-level 45 ACP loadings. Size to .452" and enjoy. These even worked well in a Glock 21, though once in a while they would hang up while feeding. No leading, and quite accurate. The 45 ACP pistols and their caliber are VERY lead-friendly.

Have fun!

bcr - First, don't waste the lino on this project. Second, you should not NEED to water drop for your purposes. Also I cast mine 50/50 WW + lead. My mix comes out around BHN 10. Works very well with any 45ACP boolit I've used, including the 452460. When you drop the boolits out of the mold, try not to drop them at an angle. Sometimes the rings left around the lube grooves will break off in places. You'll see what I mean. enjoy Mike
