Anybody made any hot light boolit loads for the acp with faster powders?

It's doable, and I've done it with both Red Dot and Bullseye.

Depending upon who makes the data, it's common, for instance, to see Hornady's top end for these two powders and 185 grain HP's to be much heavier than other loading sources.

Assuming the bullet seating depth is relatively shallow, and it is for most of the 155 cast lead and 185 grain hollowpoints, fast powders can be used without issue.

But then, it's not any better than Unique, either. Just less powder, for the most part. Since loading data often goes higher for Unique, there's more data for top end loads for the somewhat slower powders, Hornady notwithstanding.

Given the amount of unsupported brass hanging out the end of 45 Automatic barrels, I'm disinclined to go super hot. 1100 fps with these powders is about it for me when using 185 JHP's. Or around 1150 with Unique.

The nice thing about Red Dot is it's bulky, so extreme spreads in velocity can be low when using it....as good as any other powder of any type. The relatively light charge weight is offset by its high bulk per weight.

I find the various 155 cast SWC's that look like a HG 68 with a skinny nose shoot a lot better when not at maximum speeds. 1000 fps and under is better for accuracy. The other annoying thing is that they hit too low from fixed sight guns.

I've been shootin' 230s over 5 grs. of B/E out of a .45 for years.

I used to shoot 200's over 5.5 Red Dot to make major in IPSC years ago.

I load 4.0 grains of Bullseye with a SAECO 200 grain cast swc (wheelweights), sized .452". I don't have a chronograph. I shoot it for indoor 50 ft pistol league matches from a Springfield 1911a1 5" 45 acp. Shoots a big ragged hole 5 shot group at that distance. I'm guessing mv is ~ 800 fps???

I preferred 700x when I shot IPSC. The "low recoil", cleaner burning powders were pretty new then. Solo 1000 Royal Scot, Hodgon Clays, Winchester Super Target, etc were the newer powders (then). Generally, I shot 200gr, but had shot a fair number of 155s and 160s. Fast powders are better with the light bullets so that the pressure can peak and dissipate prior to the barrel unlocking on a 1911.

I use 4.2gr of Red Dot with a 200gr cast SWC, don't care what the fps is, so long as it keeps shooting the way it does.

I shot 4 grains of Red Dot under a 200 grain SWC in my 1911. It put 14 of them into 2 ragged holes the size of your thumb at 15 yards. Sold the gun to a good friend for a home protection piece.

Used Lyman 452460 200 grain SWC over Red Dot for bullseye and IDPA shooting for years very accurate.

Years ago, one of my friemds had a comped Commander that he ran 155's through. IIRC he was using a fairly stiff charge of W231 to get enough gas volume for the comp to work.

4grs of clays and any 200 gr bullet has been my ticket so far.
