I have one of the NOE 360 180 gr. RG2 HP moulds. I'm sizing this boolit to .358 with a gas check, and want try this boolit in a .38 special. I'm planning on shooting this round thru my Ruger LCR as a ccw boolit. I'm planning on making the alloy maybe 5 pounds WW's with one pound pure lead. If that is too soft, I'll probably go to 7 pounds of WW's to one pound of pre lead. This boolit is only going to be driven 80o to 900 fps, so I need a tad softer boolit to get the cavernous hollowpoint to expand nicely. I have 2400, Unique and Trail Boss powders that I load with ...one of these powders should work well.

I've been starting to search the archives here for a 180 grain boolit load for a .38 special. If someone has some data they have already loaded for this boolit combination, I'd be happy to have your data. After I get a shootable load, then I'll try the load in media like phonebooks and thru leather to see how it performs.
I think this boolit would be a great manstopper if needed given it's weight and design.
Thanks in Advance ....

With the HP, you may want to wt your boolits again after checking, sizing and lubing. I suspec they'll wt around 168 or 170gr.

If so, use that wt for looking up load data.

I like 3.8gr of WW 231

Thanks Blammer-man for the info .... I have noticed there are alot of companies selling 180 grain lead boolits in different styles, but there is very little load data out there for the 180 grain cast boolit ....

just use the jacketed 180gr load data for you cast lead 180gr ones, it'll work just fine.

Start low and work up per usual.

You were right about the NOE 360-180's !!. With the GC, they weigh approx 170 to 171 grains after sizing. I became curious and also weighed my 158 grain SWC-HP's from my Lee mould. With GC, they weigh 150 to 151 grains, not 158 like it says on the box. The alloys for these boolits are WW's with a slight tad of tin for pourability. They probably weighted 158 grains before being hollowpointed.
Interesting finds !!

just use the jacketed load data that is as close to the wt of the boolit you are shooting and you'll do just fine.

Actually, I think it is going to be pretty hard to exceed the performance of a 158 swc, wc, or swchp out of a .38 Special for personal defense. All you are going to gain with a 180 is penetration, and that is not always a good thing. Hate to rock your boat, but that is how I seee it, and we all want the best load we can carry.

this bullet works fine in an gp 100 4 ,but don't in an 66 2 1/2 the bullet seems don't stabilized

If I was CCW and had a 38 Special, it would have some kind of hollow base wad cutter loaded backwards and a suitable powder charge. That was the hot set up back before all the high performance hollow points became available. The FBI load would also be a good choice.

The round nose flat point of some sort would be in the speed loader.

Theres not much 180 gr data out there. I use the 200 gr data with my 180 gr cast bullets in the 38 Special.
