No stupid questions? What mould best approximates the conical bullet found in the old factory .45 Colt loads. I understand that the Winchester version is a hollow base. And I could probably live without that, I just want an "old" bullet to shoot out of my SAA. I can't seem to figure this out on my own. Thanks Moose

If you're interested, I do have one of the moulds listed for sale on the sale board.

how do you guys crimp the 454190? Do you usr roll into the side or do you use a taper crimp?

roll it into the side of the bullet. Taper crimps only prevent the bullet from being driven back into the case. Roll crimps immobilize the bullet, preventing it from going back in the case and from jumping forward & tying up the cylinder.

Lyman says to set your AOL for this bullet at 1.6". It looks like that is seated deep, but it puts your crimp right where it needs to be; above the top lube groove and before the taper starts.

the lack of a crimp groove has always kept me away from the 454190 but I haave always liked the design

For standard SAA loads the recoil isn't really enough to pull boolits unless the cases haven't been sized enough or have been expanded too much, so I roll the edge of the case just barely into the boolit above the top band. This allows you to seat to your cylinder and crimp where you want without being relegated to a fixed crimp groove.

moose and others,

The origianl bullet was kept from shoving back in the case because of a light crimp and a full charge of black powder. Same thing works today.

Don't let it keep you away. I have a fine two cavity that drops a .455 (it's a newer mould too, figure that one out considering Lyman's track record lately) and also a group buy with a crimp groove added.
I use the one without, I don't like the one with the crimp groove at all, even though design wise it is nearly the same boolit. I shoot these light, 8.5 grains of Unique, I crimp just above the first grease groove and it shoots great. I run a few through the lever gun too without any ill effects. It's very accurate in everything I've shot it in. I'll buy the first 4 cavity I can find that throws a good boolit.

I waited for one of these (4 cavity) for a long time. Finally bought an aluminum 4 cavity from BRP (454190 Improved).

Casts a good bullet at .455, just a little heavy at around 269 grains. I think the improved part is full groove diameter between the ogive and the top grease groove rather than slightly smaller than groove diameter in the original.

I'd still spring for an Iron 4 cavity if I ran across one.
