I see all of the posts for 30 cal 150-180 grain FN boolits and all tout the importance of a nice meplat to increase effectiveness. All this and yet the 311440 with that big ol flat nose is NEVER mentioned.
Just seems like it should work well even if distance is linited due to velocity loss.

An first hand informations opinions out there on the 311440?

TC,

It works. Yea it works alright. Used to call it the hammer. It's limitation was the weight. So if you want or take nothing but broad side shots, it a winner. I like it up around 2000 fps if you can reach that level and still have accuacy.

This is clearly a short throat bullet design made for no throat guns like pre 64 30/30s. As it is seated out you expose the lube grooves. Some people don't care for that.

my 30-06 cast gun, 7.7X58, 30 Herretts and 30-30 in the TC Pistola mode.

At least 25 of us bought the GB mold and I have not heard a peep about an shooting data on this one.

The hottest loading with the Soup Can should also work in a broad side shot for our deer here in TN.

I have heavy stuff in whel guns for stem to stern penetration.

Paco Kelley in his articles swears by the 311440 especially out of the .30/30.

Got to figure most of the GB 311440s ony hit the melting pots this summer and not many have had time to try them on game.

Before that, the original Lyman moulds were scarce as hen's teeth.

I figure after this hunting season, you'll get some feedback./beagle

I have it and have posted on it. It does well enough in my CZ 527 7.62x39 cast of air cooled WW over 16 grains of WC 820. Sized to .309, oven treated, and loaded over 38 grains of WC 846 worked in a .308. Accuracy was not stellar, but it was certainly good enough for hunting. Both rifles gave about one inch 50 yard groups.

TC,

Have you tried it in anything? 28-30 grains of RL7 or 4198 is what my wife used.

Although I generally like slower powders, they quickly move light bullet up and above 2000 fps in the volume of the 06 as you have to maintain enough pressure to get good ignition. As an example, I used 58 grains of IMR 4831 or RL19 will get you 2800 fps out of a 24" tube and about 2" trying for Dan's 2000 RPM contest. But that is way to fast for 14 BHN on game.
