Wondered if anyone has cleaned a barrel using "Brasso"? Got up early and just got to thinking (dangerous proposition) and for some reason, cleaning barrels popped into mind. Thinking about getting out the "foul out" and working on an enfield barrel and the Brasso thing came to mind.

If memory serves me, it has ammonia in it, or at least did many moons ago.

Does it work or is it a bad idea?

Here's the manufacturer's web-site: http://www.reckittprofessional.com/index.jsp
and here's the link to their MSDS for Brasso: http://www.rbnainfo.com/productpro/ProductSearch.do?brandId=3&productLineId=183&searchType=PL&template=1
Mostly water, sand (silica abrasive), with the ammonia (ammonium hydroxide) near the bottom of the list.

It will make the copper in your bore very shiny.

Seriously, if you have a coppered-up bore, there are several solvents that will help. I'm partial to the Montana X-Treme Bore Solvent (currently on sale at Midway) and Montana X-Treme Copper Killer brands, as well as the Outer's Foul Out tool. Others will have differing opinions and there are other similar solvents. Point is, Brasso is a brass and copper polish. You should probably be using a material designed for the job at hand, rather than trying to make Brasso do a job for which it wasn't designed.

Stew

AZ is right.use the correct solvent and copper goes away. I don't think Brasso is the right one. It is designed to polish, not remove copper or brass.
I have found the TM solution works very well at copper removal. Not the fastest but it sure works.

If you want the copper to go away just use 10% janitorial ammonia found at the ace hardware store. Use with good ventilation.

I remember reading where Elmer Keith took his rifle while at Camp Perry, plugged the bore, and filled it with ammonia. Then next morning it was clean. I belive I saw it in the book "Hell, I was There."

First time I saw Brasso, it was Marine Issue on P.I. Not a bbl cleaner, and kind of agree with who ever said it would polish your fowling. OK to add to brass polishing crushed walnut media however.

Only thing I ever used Brasso for was my belt buckles when I was on active duty & the bright work on my boat when I owned it.

Beware of using Brasso on brass cartridge cases due to the ammonia. Supposed to change the grain structure or harden it somehow.
Maybe a chemist type member can give the correct reason to use or not use on brass cases.

Dr Mann refers to 29% ammonia for cleaning bores!

If you get to formation in the morning and find that there is going to be an inspection shortly, Brasso will shine those boots up temorarily, that is if you cant find some high gloss spray paint!
