Different now or the same powder? I have only used H4227 and it seems I bought some of the IMR stuff instead.

Only about a 1/4 lb of H4227 left.

Thanks

Assume different, unless YOU prove otherwise. The lots might be the same and were stored equally. Then they would be equal. ... felix

The current powders are made at the same plant and packaged under both the Hodgen and IMR labels. They are the same, except for differences in lot.

I just looked at an old Hodgdon H4227 manual and compared the 44 mag and 357 mag loads against the loads on the site now for IMR. The same loading for both powders show the same velocity and preassure.

I was under the impression that H4227 is no longer being made. IMR4227 is the only choice now. I thought they were similar but different.

It recently got a bit more confusing - or less.

Because they were so close, Hodgdon decided to market only one of them. So IMR 4227 will be the only one sold. But it will be made using aspects of Hodgdon's Extreme technology. So you'll get the best features of both.

Just buy it, workup from a slightly reduced load and you'll be fine.

My IMR 4227 is pretty old so I'm assuming that I will just work up the loads again when that runs out. Oh darn, more range time.

My IMR 4227 is from the 70's. I haven't used any of the new fangled 4227. What would be the difference in mine and the new stuff? I hope they didn't mess around with the grain size or shape.

I was told by the factory a few years ago that the new imr is made to the h4227 specs and packaged in imr cans. . The old imr powder was the one that was discontinued.

Lloyd, isn't the new IMR 4227 one of Hogdon's "extreme powders" that are less sensitive to temperature changes? I had never used IMR 4227, but a friend gave me 4 unopened cans of the older stuff, and I have found that I like it for more uses than I thought I would. Nice powder for cast in many calibers. I haven't shot any in my 44's, or 45 Colts yet, but I will.
