I was wondering who uses the 457193 in thier 45/70 for a hunting bullet and what type of load?

I use it with 28gr of IMR 4198 or 32gr of Reloder 7 to give it about 1300 to 1400fps. Most of my shots are 50 to 75 yards and I don't like a lot of recoil. Hasn't failed me yet on deer or feral hogs.

BoolitBill thanks that is what I am looking for. Most of my shots are also around 50 yards are less. I did take a small doe this year at 85 yards but was using Rem 405 gr factory loads. I have both a Lee 405 gr mould and a Lyman 457193 . What alloy were you using?

I use it with 29 grns of AA5744 for around 1400. Light recoil. Took a deer this through the spine ( the coward decided to run) minimal meat damage, using acww.

I have the Lee equivalent to the 457193. I use 16 gr. of Unique and 25 to 1 alloy. It'll go through a 600# pig shoulder to shoulder.

That really sounds good as I was hoping to use unique. Is this from a Marlin 1895?:-D

13 gr. is the start load, 16 is near max. These were shot out of an H&R handi.

I like a group buy mould we did a few years back. 365 grain round flat over 15 grains of Universal Clays gives just over 1300 fps out of both my Handi and 1895. Very nice and accurate load. These were wheel weight.

Universal Clays. I have never used this powder before. Is this a recommended load?

Sounds as if 13gr would be the place to start with a 430gr bullet. Made from WW

Greetings
I have shot this bullet (457193) out of all my 45-70s to include Marlins, Peabody, jap Win 86, and wrapped for my Trapdoor (.463 throat) . Up to 1200 fps Unique ( 15.5-16 gr) works very well but I personally switch to 2400 (22 grains) when I want to get to 1200 + fps.
Unique is a great powder for those mid velocity loads. But crossing the max threshold can get into serious pressure spikes.
My old Lyman cast book shows 16.5 as max with the 405 and I seriously respect that info.

I shoot the 457124 (405 grain RN) over 26 gr of IMR4198 for around 1200 fps from my (repro) Trapdoor carbine. Haven't actually hunted with this combination but based on expansion/penetration of boolits recovered from test medium (paper wetpack), for shots under 125 yards, I wouldn't hesitate to use it on 'bout anything short of big bear or, maybe, moose.

Well, I recommended it. :)

It burns very close to Unique, so I just worked up to it. It's not a max load, it's quite mild actually. Very clean shooting too.

Bought my Lyman 457193 mold back in 1973 for a Marlin 1895, then used it in a rebarrelled Remington rollingblock for sillywets Chickens + Pig load.

Fantastic boolit...

457193 and 50 grs IMR3031. Whoo-ee. In that little short H & R Handi. Had to install recoil pad on it.

Excellent article in the March issue of the Single Shot Exchange entitled A Bullet for All Seasons.
The author Croft Barker successfully uses it in the .45-70, .577-450, 11.5x57R and 11.7x51.6R by either sizing down or paper patching up to fit bore size.

The differences in data from one manual to another is both interesting and confusing. By way of comparison my Lyman Reloading Handbook, 46th Edition (1982) gives the following data:

457193
Unique.......Start 11.0..........Max 13.5
2400..........Start 21.0..........Max 25.7
3031..........Start 38.5..........Max 47.0 38.5 being shown as potentially most accurate.

For the 405 gr. JSP
3031...........Start 38.5.........Max 48.0 38.5 being shown as potentially most accurate. I have been using 52.0 gr. of 3031 under this bullet for years & some manuals do not show THAT as being max. I just check with multiple sources, work up and keep an eye out for pressure signs. Has worked so far:-) I might back off of this load if it didn't shoot so well...only downside is that it kicks like a mule.

Sounds like the old Keith 45/70 Load?

I shoot an old Browning Model B-78 in .45-70 Govt. (yeah ... one of those hurtin' monsters with the solid steel curved rifle buttplate ...) and it loves that 457193 cast from WW's over 28 grains of IMR4198. It gets boring it shoots so well ...

That's a great hunting bullet. I use IMR 4759 and find a sweet spot between 25 and 28 grains and up to 220 yards it has poven to be a good hunting load and not bad target load.

I like the 457193 but I was fortunate enough to score a RD 460-350 and found a good hunting load for it before I found one for the 457193 or the excellent Gould 457122. I plan on exploring both moulds again someday but suspect both need Beagling to work in my Guide Gun.

I have shot the 415 gr. 45-70 bullet made by Desperado from Larry Gibson’s H&R Officers Model Trapdoor. As Larry informed me this bullet appears to be the Lyman #457193. Desperado lists their bullet as 415 gr. and the Lyman #457193 is listed as a 405 gr. the difference is in the alloy. With this load I consistently hit rocks no larger than 36 x 36in. out to 690 yards. I didn’t miss and I was on call. Larry lased the rock and I shot after he put on the windage and elevation. Just like a good sniper team would do, besides, I had no idea what it would be...never shot a Trapdoor before! Temperature was around 87 deg. with a 5 to 8 mph wind from L to R. I had so much fun, I had to by a Trapdoor, which I did (H&R Officers Model). Herein is the load data.

Bullet: Desperado 415 gr (45-70) (Lyman #457193)
Powder: H 4895
Weight: 36 gr.
Primer: WLR
Case: WIN
Velocity: 1350 fps
Filler: ¾ gr. Dacron

457124 has been my caseless round (muzzleloading ) boolit.
457193 is one of those that needs to be tried!

Hey Synthesis! A lot of water under the bridge since we were in Company D (Provisional) together.

Shooting out in the desert with Larry is a real hoot! Hopefully I'll get down to Arizona on my annual Rocky Mountain road trip and shoot-a-thon this spring. As we are both retired troopers now, perhaps we can coordinate a link-up op at the desert RP.

Welcome aboard.
