I just got it home.... a little late in the day for good pics. It was shipped September, 1983 according to the factory letter. This NIB gun is unfired but I don't intend for it to stay that way...:bigsmyl2: What troubles me is that there are more unfired Smiths in the collection this 24-3 came from....Need more $$$$$

Hopefully this pic will provoke some of you "special" fans to post some pictures...

Good find!

As requested, here's my contribution - a 1985 Lew Horton 624 no dash.

I bought this unfired last month.

It is no longer unfired. :)

Let's just say you'll pay north of $700. You might find one under that, if so try not to look nervous as you scramble for your wallet.

I paid $700 for a stainless 624 6.5" bbl with origional box, papers, cleaning kit still sealed in its plastic baggie. And had the red circle c on the box. Love the pistol except for the front sight. Gonna get one of those front sights with the large gold bead up front. I at first was shocked at laying out the money. But did a little checking on sales prices in various states. They vary widely. I guess I did pretty good then:drinks: having stayed just a bit south of that.

I have trouble seeing the front sight on my 6 1/2" 624 also. Since it is pinned and easy to replace I'm thinking about a hi-viz green....

Snapping Twig

I'd sure like to find one like yours. Nice gun. I settle for a 4" 624 or one of those little 696's too.....

A local shop has a real limited inventory. I had worked 16 hours, had 8 off and another 16 scheduled. I had to wait to pick up my car at the repair shop next door, so walked in and saw a 6.5 624 for $450! Sleeping at the switch, I didn't put a deposit on it. Got the car, went home, slept fast, and headed for work when I realized I'd dropped the ball on that one. Shop was closed Monday; got there Tuesday after work with wallet in hand and it was still available. No box or goodies; I sent it to S&W after hearing about the recall...it was good...and it sits amid my RUGERS as we speak.

there are some periodically on gunbroker, etc BUT don't expect a bargain price. You might get lucky, but they are popular and pricey!

Although I love the older .44Special HE’s the 24-3s and 624s are certainly more affordable ! Yours is beautiful & a great find !

I have a few of the 4” 624s and they are great shooting guns ! In my opinion the 4” is one of the best used gun buys around !

There are a lot of .44Special fans on this Forum and I am sure people like Dale will be here shortly ! :) :)

Outstanding photo's of outstanding guns! Especially like the grips on those last three. Would the first 4" grip be a laminate?

To each his own I guess but I can not imagine an unfired handgun in my possession! Those are pretty .44's, thanks for the pics.

The orange colored wood is "lacewood" from Australia. Here is a close-up of the same grips on a Model 25-7.

Here's an older 44 special. It's not as pretty as some but when I pick it up it sure gets warm in my hand.

GLL is correct. Here's's's's's', DALE!! (ala Johnny Carson).

I have been a .44 Special fan for many, many years. Mine are all "working guns" and have been shot a bit.

My first one is this Model 24 - it came from the estate of a shooting buddy (may he rest in peace):

http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj80/Dale53/DalesPistolsRevolvers4Selects-0323.jpg

My next two were bought new when they were first introduced (as a result of Skeeter Skelton's efforts with Smith & Wesson):

http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj80/Dale53/DalesPistolsRevolvers4Selects-0307.jpg

Then came the Cimarron in .44 Special:

http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj80/Dale53/DalesPistolsRevolvers4Selects-0318.jpg

Last, but certainly not least, is the recent acquisition (a year or so ago) the Ruger .44 Lipsey Special:

http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj80/Dale53/DalesPistolsRevolvers4Selects-0388.jpg

I can't seem to help it. I just like .44 Specials, I do, I do:drinks:

By the way, these guns DEMAND good ammunition. I have just the thing, doncha know:

http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj80/Dale53/4DalesPistolsRevolversSelects-3330.jpg

My all time favorite bullet for all 'round use including big game hunting is one of these in solid or hollow point (from MiHec moulds, of course

Well, I'll be darned. That's the first time I ever did see Dale screw up in a photo! Why that base on the middle bullet got dropped. Look at that DING!

Now I understand why , up until Ruger came out with it's Special lineup, that it was so hard to get your hands on one.

You guys hogged'em all!

c.r. Your Alan Harton conversion is one sweet looking revolver. Nice!

All these special pics are just whetting the appetite and making me want to spend money.

Now....A question for you folks with the Smiths...Both my "new" 24 and 624 have throats that measure just short of .433". I have a 4 cav Ideal 429244 that drops at .434" and a .4525" Star sizing die. That combination turned the 624 into a fine shooter although it wasn't too bad with .431" bullets. I have a new RCBS 250 K that I haven't even used yet so don't know if it drops fat bullets or not. I feel a custom mould coming on....

What diameter cast bullets are you folks using??

Snapping Twig

I haven't checked chamber size, but I size my Lyman 429421 & 429244 at .429, lube with White Label BAC and shoot over 7.5g Unique or 6.5g W231.

Haven't shot over 10 yards with it, but will soon. At 10 yards, one big hole with no fliers for two cylinders - 12 rounds.

You win the prize (a glass of your favorite tipple but you have to show up to get it:veryconfu)!!

I deliberately left that nick in there just to see if you fellers would spot it! Not much gets past you fellers and gals!

Jerry;
Thanks for sharing those excellent photos of two fine revolvers with us.

I grew up lusting after those two revolvers - nearly wore out my Shooters Digests. I finally got that lust satisfied with my Model 24 and later 624's. I got all of my education from Elmer Keith's books and magazine articles (and excellent reloading information along with Al Barr's articles in the American Rifleman, etc).

Thanks again for sharing...
