got one for less than 100 at a show yesreday , (8mm,,mod38,,1943)
is it correct that the turks used small ring threaded barrels in the large ring receiver ? if so why (maybe plenty of "smalls " to use up?):coffeecom:twisted:

You hit it!
The Swede 6.5 X 55 will screw directly into it. Only have to get rid of the lip on the reciever.
A good find.

Try this link:

lots of info.

I picked up a pair a few months ago, and I am about 1/2 way through "sporterizing" the first one. Probably won't be recognizeable by the time I get through.

Careful, it is true that the majority of Turks are small ring thread..........BUT, you'll occasionally find a large ring thread action in a Turk.

swede 6.5 huh!.
now that is interesting ,something to ponder,
the lip on the receiver ?you mean the "overlap" that the handguard fits under?
sounds like an easy job for a COMPETANT gunsmith, its a thought so i'll think.
have a great night .

That is the one. Numerich also has a modern bent bolt that will fit also.
I had tossed that around for a while, but built two .243s so my wife and I could go to the range together.
I had wondered what a K-Khale would look like in full wood!
Food for thought.
And, no, the lip can be simply filed off.

As of today, (1/3/11) they are sold out of the stripped body with a reformed handle (normally $65). A complete assembly is $153. My smith said he would turn down the original for $40.

The turned down bolt handle is way too short for my liking.
Get the complete assembly. You won't regret it later.
Twede! I like that.

The handle is a bit short on those Turks.

Here are a couple options for that.

This one is nice as it is Turk Specific

Don't buy the new barrel until you turn off the old one so you can be sure you have the right size. THat's good advice. take it from someone who knows from experience. Luckily I had a spare LR Mauser action to put the barrel on and the Turk ended up being chambered in a different SR caliber when I finally got back around to converting it.

I did a couple of turks and the shank on the turk barrel is longer than a 1896 shank. So you will need to move the shoulder back a little on the new barrel. It takes two seconds for a smith or anyone with a lathe to do. Other than that the only other problem can be getting the old barrel off. Of all the mausers I have taken barrels off the turk seems to be the hardest. The last one I did was a light sporter with the adams and bennet 6.5X55 barrel but that was too easy so I made it an Akley Improved 6.5X55 lol. Similar to the 6.5X284.

I did a K Kale sporter for my dad and as the 8MM barrel was like new I left it 8MM. The gun will shoot under 2" all day long at 100 yards and has killed deer for him so if the barrel is good try it in 8MM first.

If you want to keep it 8mm, I have a fair to good condition small shank barrel that I'll let go for $15 plus shipping.
