I just took delivery on my new 480 SRH with 9.5" barrel yesterday 12/31. I shot 36rounds threw it with pleasant results with room to improve.

My load was:

Brass - Starline
Primer – Win. Large Pistol
Powder – Win. 296 @ 19.0gr.
Bullet – Hornady XTP 400gr.
Velocity - Average 1000 F.P.S.
Max C.O.L - 1.650"

Accuracy wasn't the best but I'll take blame for it as it was 22* wind 20MPH gusting to 25MPH. Was getting 4" 6 shot groups at 40 yards with a two handed hold, after I got it on target.

I measured up the gun after I got it cleaned up from its condum outting. Cyl. throats .4785" and the bore .474” so my cast boolits will work great once my sizer die and new reloading dies come in.
This was the best part 28169
There is over .145" of play room in that cylinder for me to use.

I think your going to like the 480 Ruger, I just wish Ruger would make a 5 shot bisley Blackhawk in the 480 . I`ll buy at lease two!!:-)

A great caliber with a surplus of power for anything you want to use it for & without the heavy, heavy recoil of some of the even bigger guns. I've taken quite a big of game with a SRH & my 5 shot 480 by Alan Harton, both guns have accounted for bull moose using 370 gr softnose cast slugs.

As nice as the SRH is(did I say that about a big heavy DA!), I can't wait for my 5 shot SA 480 to come in. Hopefully Monday!

Great caliber but step it up a little. Your twist does not support the heavy bullet when shot too slow.
I was using 20.5 gr of 296 with that bullet.

I was just using that 19grs as a load to have fun and get used to the gun.
My plan is to load the Lee 400gr boolit with 296 and will probly start at 21.5grs and go up from there.

Ya that would be great!! But in this day and time, profits are more important than taking care of customers who have spent decades supporting a company. See Ruger, like the other firearms manufacturers seem to be driven by the low cost in making new guns out of recycled pop bottles than real guns capable of life long use. They can make em cheaper and sell em for more profit, and all they have to do is go bang????? Please let the Ruger C.E.O. Know how you feel and what we as handgun hunters really want!! And how many decades us that want em have been supporting them!! make mine a 5 1/2" Bisley in stainless steel!!

Right, they are in the business to make a profit. The .480 went by the wayside because they weren't making any money off of the sale of .480s. It's an unfortunate reality.

Whitworth is right. Ruger probably sells a lot more small, cheap revolver/ autos than they even will specialized hunting guns. It is about mass production and profit. You might want a 5.5 inch bisley but do you want 5000? Mayber 10,000? They want big runs of the same product.
This is the reality of today's business model. Produce for the masses, not the individual.

I foolishly traded my .480 9.5 scoped SRH. I would rather have a 7.5 " model. I was breaking clay pigeons @ 100 yards offhand with a cast RCBS 400 grain mold and some 2400.

I wish I would have kept the darn thing....

I wish I would have kept the darn thing....I am disposing of my SRH 480s. While I have only the 4.75-inch "carry" gun actively on the market, I am planning to put my 7.5-incher - with substantial accouterments - at sale soon.

No sir this was purchased/won on gunbroker.com with months of bidding on my part. To be honest it came at a really bad time (week before christmas) but my small bid won and the wife only smiled.
