Just received a Lyman mold 2660490, a 255 grain gc, that casts perfect except for one thing............the base where the GC is supposed to fit is too big and the GC's are next to impossible to put on.

I have the same problem with a Lee 310 GTC mold........

What are some possible remedies or fixes that I can try ? [smilie=b: :-(

Anneal the gas checks, or send it back are you options. A good way to anneal the checks is a pipe nipple with caps on each end and put them in your wood burner or fire place.

Flatbed all I do when I have one of those types is find a steel ball bearing set it on the check and give it good (mild) whack with the brass hammer and it opens right up. I know for my 30 cal checks I use a .500 bearing and it works just fine for me.

A ball bearing large enough to rest on the rim of the check but not touch the bottom, and then struck with a hammer will open the check.

Have you tried a gas check seater?

Hopefully it is just that lot of gas checks.

I had a similar need but for a different problen and took a pin punch and cut the pin part off and with careful grinding of the end shortened it to the point that the end is the boolit shank size and the taper on the pin punch is just enough to make a fit for the GC onto the shank so seating in the lubrisizer is as simple as it should be.

I did the "punch" trick but used some cold drawn wire I had laying around. Just grind & polish a taper on it that will start in the check and open it up when it hits bottom in the check. It looks like a redneck version of what Von Guff has in the pic. I know that for Hornady checks at least, for some boxes I need to open them up and some work just fine out of the box. .22's are very fiddly to have to open up I might add...

talk to NOE and see if they have any GC shank swagers in your die you need, a quick trip through that and the GC's will fit nicely.

Question
Are you using Lyman or Hornady gas checks?
The Lyman are a small bit larger in internal diameter

The gas checks are Hornady.......I will measure and see.........bur the fit my RCBS molds just fine............

Thanks to the previous responses, I have come up with the idea of using a round headed bolt of the appropriate size to use as an expander....

Measure shank and check here before you buy checks:
http://castboolits.gunloads.com/images_acps/misc/paperclip.gif (http://castboolits.gunloads.com/#) http://castboolits.gunloads.com/images_acps/misc/sticky.gif Sticky: Gas Checks vs Shank Size (http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?t=11997)

Buy the right size.....then you have no problem.

Yes, the Hornady gas checks will fit the RCBS mould just fine, but some Lyman moulds are made to fit Lyman gas check and are a bit tooooooo large for crimp ons

My uncles 41 checks are a TIGHT fit. I've tied the punch idea and found it was easier to get a carriage bolt (with the round head) and tap it on the check. Flares it very good, and easier than finding new checks. Much faster and easier than my punch.

Don't forget NOE has a tool for swaging gas check shanks the fits in your reloading press.
