So i have been thinking about porting the barrels of some of the guns i have but not sure who i would go about it and what needs to be done to the inside of the barrel after the porting is cut. I do have a mill so thats what i would be using.

you could probably do a reasonable job with a drill and an end mill.

then lap the area gently with some fine grit?

thats what i was thinking but was not sure. would you recomend just lapping the entire bore while im at it?

I can tell you from experience in drilling gas ports on barrells that any bur you kick up in drilling a barrell will quickly disappear upon firing. If your that worried about burrs, Stick a bullet in the barrell under your hole. I used to do this till I learned better.

like akajun said, couple shots thru it an no burrs!!! I made a drill jig that clamped over my barrel of my 11/87 that works well, it took some of the recoil away, then had to trim the recoil spring, but very happy how it turned out!!

Like others have said, any burrs will quickly disappear after a shot or two. I used to ream the holes after drilling, but it is not necessary. These days I use a CNC mill with a controlled indexing head. That way I can place the holes in a row between the lands in the rifling, following the twist - looks rather snazzy ;-)

Porting usually makes the value of guns plummet. Something else to consider.
