I've liked the Stoney Point bullet seating gauge since I first saw it in the patent office database.

An earlier item noted in the Stoney Point patent. Seems to be a wee bit simplified but of the same notion, to determine where the bullet bumps the rifling and measure it to duplicate that cartridge overall length. I just finished it tonight so I haven't had a chance to use it to see if there's any flaws in my simple minded rendition.

Mine is simplified as far as I can figure how to simplify it for my own use. There's a push rod, a housing with a little wing screw and the pilot cases. The hollow tube is 303 Stainless steel with the brass part silver soldered on. The push rod is 3/16" 1018 carbon steel.

The thread size is 5/16-36. I searched out a supplier and bought the 1" split die and plug tap. Under $20 for both. This is the Stoney Point (Hornady) thread size.

So far I've threaded these cases: 6.5x55 Swede (Norma), .30-06 (LC Match), .30-40 Krag (R-P), 7.5x55 Swiss (Graf), 7.62x54R Russian (Graf), 8x57 Mauser (reformed '06). I have yet to do 7.65x53 Argentine, 8x58R Danish, 7x57 Mauser.

When you have multiple rifles in the same caliber this little tool can be very interesting to use. I have a U.S. Model 1917 Rifle and 1903 Springfield. I have 3 rifles in 8x57 Mauser Gewehr 98, Persian 98/29, K98k, two rifles in 7.65x53 1891 and 1909 Argentine, two Swiss rifles 1896/11 & K31, 7 or 8 Swedes and between myself and my son-in-law we have more Mosins than I can count with all my fingers and toes.

They will all have different seating depths with the same bullet. I'm looking forward to seeing how valuable this seating depth gauge really is.

I too make my own modified cases for the stoney point OAL gage.
