I purchased 5 new, never fired M-249 machine gun barrels chambered for the 5.56 nato cartrige at a mil-surp place. They are 16 1/2 inches long and have the muzzle / flash supressors already in place. The chamber has threads that measure .785 OD and are fully ready to be installed. Problem is, I dont own a M-249 machine gun. What can i use these for? Will they thread in an adaptor for use in an AR? Are they junk? They seem to be 1/7 twist barrels, so..... Any help would be appreciated.

If you find out if they will fit on an AR with some minor adapting, let me know. I want a longer barrel than the one thats on it. I think it is around 10" I have never measured it.

If they are good condition M249 barrel, you may find your better off selling them and just buying a good AR barrel with the money. SOT's who own M249's pay thru the nose for good ones.

Unless you own your own machine shop (or have a very good friend who owes you favor) it would cost more in labor and materials to make it work on an AR than it would to buy a new correct barrel for it. - remember it has a chrome lined chamber so any rechambering will be a PITA - you'll have to make up a customer barrel extention for AR bolt to work with it. Then there is the gas system to adapt.

Go over to http://www.sturmgewehr.com/webBBS/parts.cgi
search for prices on 249 barrels - they have one now new in bag 750.00 for it.
