as a test i loaded a 325 gn
boolit with 25grn. imr4227
WSR primers

and noticed some unburnt powder coming out of the cases after firing.
not a lot but some.
i am wondering if i should give it even more of a crimp or move the boolit back to the other groove?
or both?

4227 is one of those powders that is about impossible to get to burn clean. What i was told by some knowlegable handloaders is its not really unburned powder your getting with it that its unburned filler that added to the powder to bulk it and by the consistant chronograph readings i get with it even with the unburned stuff id have to believe it.

thanks lloyd
i guess i just wont worry about it then.
i am getting plenty of power and good enough accuracy so no sense working myself up into a tizzy. :-D

The ES and SD will confirm that for you too.

The thing I do when I see unburned powder is to go right ahead and shoot that load if it shoots well. Unless there is an unearthly amount of unburned powder I don't fret over it.
On a double action revolver remember to turn the muzzle straight up so when you dump the cases the unburned powder won't fall between the extrtactor and the recess it mates into.
Other than that I don't care myself.

what do those letters mean?

Short version:
ES = Extreme Spread = highest velocity reading - lowest velocity reading
SD = Standard Deviation = the measure of how close each shot’s velocity in the shot string will be to the “average”
Both are derived from shooting over a chronograph and documenting the resulting velocity readings.

Hope this helps!

WSR primers? 454 loads call for mag primers, Rem 7 1/2's, CCI 450's or Fed 205's. I only use non mag CCI 400's for plinking rounds with Unique. I'd make sure you have the basics- mag primers, good neck tension, nice firm crimp.

the LYMAN manual says small rifle -magnum preferred
the SPEER says CCI 400
the LEE says SMALL RIFLE
thats why i am using small rifle primers.

THAT is good advice.
these are working fine in my raging bull.
and like i said there are about 10 unburnt flakes after shooting.

I agree with Lloyd. I always get a good bit of left overs when shooting 4227 behind 240's in the 44 mag. I only have a few pounds of it left and after that it will be 300+ boolits and H110.

You will get what looks like unburnt powder with the h110 too but it is just flakes in the powder that will not burn no matter what.
