Does anyone use this Bullet Lyman 457193 in their marlin 1895GG. The mold I have drops a bullet weighing 430gr after lubing.

Guess this was a dumb question once I started searching the forum. Lets of great loads. Does anyone use Unique with this bullet? Would like to get a load around 1350.

Never used that bullet or unique in 45-70 but have used a lot of 2400. Try 20 to 24 grains of 2400 and it should be in your velocity window.
Do you own a Lyman cast bullet manual? If not, they are a good reference for things like this.

Here's another good source. Use the pull down menu on the left:

Thanks this was a great help. (Bullseye in the 45/70?) I have about 3 lb just lying around. Does anyone use it in the 45/70?

28.5 grains 5744 shoots real good in my Marlin with a boolit like the one you got.

I load a 451114 that drops a 430 over 52gr of AA2495.

for a hoot try putting 70gr of geox 2f blackpowder in a case and compress enough to seat your boolit rite on top of the powder. put an over powder card between the boolit n the powder and let fly...oh and better lube ur boolit with a good blackpowder lube or the mess is gonna be monumental and you will never look at bp again for cartridges....ask me how i know this...lol

its gonna blow ur mind and the fun with the sparks and puff of smoke will make your blood boil i bet...but wait...dont do this if you dont want another exhilirating avenue to chase...its addicting!

Sounds like fun but what about the clean up?

I use 3.0 grains of it to ignite the WC-860 that's on top of it but Bullseye alone is much too fast as a primary powder in the 45-70. (Now just watch someone come along with a load they use!)

One part Ballistol to five parts water will easily neutralize and clean up any bp residue. Great for the wood too!

32 grains of IMR4198 should get you pretty close, pay attention to COL or you'll have feeding problems in a Marlin 1895.

Gentleman:
I have a question, I have a modern Pedersoli Sharps and what I am shooting in it now is 16.2 gr. of Trailboss but what I was wondering, are the loads that you are discussing safe to use in the Sharps? I am just curious is why I am asking.

FWIW, the 32gr IMR4198 load above is at the lower end of Lyman's "Trapdoor Springfield" data :coffeecom

John;

Thanks for the reply, I get a little leery when reading some of load data. I don't want anything to happen.

I agree, you can't be too careful, any published loading data is just a guide IMO. For deals like this look at all different sources and in the end it's YOU'R responsibility. If you've got a copy of the latest Hodgdon 2011 Annual Manual look up .45-70 Gov't (Trapdoor Rifles). Both IMR4198 and Trailboss are listed, as so often is the case you'll find their data is a little different than Lymans data but I think you'll be surprised to note that your 16.2gr Trailboss load appears to produce quite a bit more pressure than 32gr IMR4198.

John;

Thanks, I don't have any Hodgdon manuals, but I do have and use the new Lymans manual and an older Sierra manual. That is interesting tho, I just went to the Hodgdon's web site and see that the Trailboss has 25,600CPU as where the 4198 has19,000CPU but the funny thing is the 4198 has a more defined recoil then the Trailboss. Shooting from the bench the Trailboss has more of a push as to were the 4198 is more like a punch. I started shooting some rounds that a buddy gave me loaded with 4198 in my 22" handi rifle and wanted some thing with a little less recoil that is why I went with the Trailboss. I went by the guidelines that IMR put out ( http://www.imrpowder.com/PDF/Trail-Boss-data.pdf ) in order to work up the load and it shoot fine and I don't see any signs of HP. I am going to have to try some 4198 again and see what it does in the Sharps.

Thanks again

Matt
