Not looking to debate loads

I have just always wondered why they choise 28,000 PSI ?

Isn't everything the same as a 44 mag expect for a larger hole in the cyclinder ?

I am looking at a barely used RedHawlk in 45 colt
No need for 454 loads
But the 28K Ruger/TC 45 colt loads and 38K 44 mag loads just make me scratch my head

Cylinder Walls are thinner in the 45 colt and the loads for TC/Ruger IIRC are rated at 32,000 PSI. Testing done on the Ruger 45 colt demonstrated the cylinder to be about 80% as strong as the 44 mag so that is where the Ruger/TC 45 colt pressures come from.

OK
I will buy that

I have just always wondered
Especaily when I see load data every once in a while that gives 38 - 40 K 45 colt loads

don't it have to do with chamber pressure and the weight of the boolit
the colt runs at a lower chamber pressure than the 44 in a same weight boolit
so you do more with less

I believe the Colt does shoot as fast at lower pressure. I have 2 S&W Mountain Guns, .44 and .45 Colt. Shooting a 315 Gr. in the .44, and a 320 in the .45, velocity tops out on both within 25 fps. of each other.

The Redhawk is a stronger revolver than the SB. The 80% rule is a good one for the SB. The SR and Redhawks can stand more pressure easily. I have had 2 Redhawks chambered in 454 in the 6 shot cylinders. I have shot the factory 300 grain loads, but prefer loads a bit less than that. No need for the 60,000 PSI full throttle 454 loads IMHO&E

The higher pressure loads you have seen are good ones probably, but they are meant to be used in 5 shot .45 Colt handguns that are generally custom chambered, and fit. They also often use cylinders that are larger than the factory standard Blackhawk cylinders, and are sized to just fit a cylinder frame opening that has been "trued up".

Rather than trying to repeat anything he has said, I rather refer you to John Linebaugh's site... He has writren quite a bit about 45 Colt loads in the Ruger class... Go to his site, the click on the "writings" tab...

5 shot 45 load data is listed on the Hodgdon site as 450 Extreme.

Lee Martin just did an article about it
