I stopped into the local pawn/ gun shop yesterday and stumbled upon a Marlin 336 in .35 Rem. It has a 2/3 magazine tube; a "perch belly" walnut forend and a walnut stock with the "bullseye" intact; a glossy blue that is excellent except for slight muzzle wear; and a crisp, clean ballard-cut rifled barrel. It was missing the rear sight elevator, and I suspect that the front sight ramp is aftermarket.

I'm guessing this rifle is from the early days (1950- 1956ish) by the rifling and the chambering...

Can anyone suggest what the going rate for this rifle would be?

I have to admitt that I fell instantly in love and whipped out the credit card ($!)... If she shoots as well as she looks then she'll be named "Old Girl" to take her place alongside the .45-70 NEF Handirifle that was dubbed "The Fat Lady" by a hunting buddy. She'll likely get a Williams rear peep to accomodate my eyes, and I didn't notice if she was drilled for a scope mount, I recall that she had the wavy striations on top of the receiver, but no filler screw filled holes.

I can post photos if anyone cares to oogle her...

I bought a 336SC like you have about 6 or 7 years ago . Mine was made in 52 and was also 35 REM with the finish being about 97% . I bought it at a little gunshop in Hamlin PA for $250 !

I sold it about a year ago on Gunbroker and got $400 for it .

I have one of those "sporting carbines" in 35 Rem as well. Mine had a receiver sight on it when I bought it, but had never been D&T for scope.

I would expect the twist to be the normal 1-16".

a local reloading/ gun shop had a bin of fired brass, and I dug out 100 RP cases for $20! In the tumbler now. next stop some dies!

You can date your Model 336SC via the letter prefix of the serial number.

Marlin first introduced the .35 chambering, in the SC, in 1950, using SN prefix "G".

1951=H, 1952=J, 1953=K, etc. (Marlin skipped letters "I", "O", & "Q", IIRC)

My father had a Remington mod. 14 pump in 35 Rem. He shot mule deer when we lived in Utah. It is a fine round which has never been given the respect it deserves. Congrats on your purchase.

By 1956 Marlin had made all barrels Micro Groove. I picked up a 35 similar to yours but with a 24 inch barrel this spring for about $450. Mine came with a scope mounted and a hard case. It also had a compass inletted by the buttplate. Very good almost unfired condition with 7 Groove rifling. If I remember it was a 336A.
