I have an old mold my father gave me. It's got to be 50 years old, give or take, still use it--230 gr RN .45 caliber.

Anyway the screw hole has stripped out. Thoughts on how to keep this mold usable?

thanks,
Walt

Retap to a larger size and have a screw made or a collar to adapt an off the shelf screw.

I can do that.

Go to a automotive supply or on the net and find heli-coils. They work well and I have used them for over 40 years. Motorcycle shops also have them.

Pin locked thread repair inserts are my preferred method for dealing with that sort of problem.

Heli coils are my #2 choice.

Drilling out the sprue plate & tapping the block to a larger thread size would be my #3 choice.

Helicoils require a special odd sized tap that is kind of expensive for a one time use.

Erik Ohlen repaired a Lyman two cavity mould for me about a month ago with almost the same problem. Cost was $20 to $25.

You might want to give him a shout and see if he will do the repair. He's quick, competent, and fairly priced in my opinion.

turn the die 180*, drill and tap a new hole for the plate. dont forget the stop pin on the opposing mold though. I had to do this with mine, the screw broke flush with the mold, then I broke the drill bit below grade when I tried to drill out the old screw stud.
