Loaded an interesting round today. Took a Hornady #3005, which is a 100 grain pointy lead bullit with a small meplat with a short jacket...era gas check and loaded some 30-30 rounds. It is meant for the M1 Carbine. Looks like a regular cast with a enlogated check. Hornady calls it a short jacket.

I used 39.5 grains of 748. Had to use my Hornady New Dimension 308 seater. Everything else would grab the pointy little lead pill and pull it out. Of course, that was before I started crimping.

The pressure is a bit low, I got some primers backed out just a hair with no other deformity; like flattening primers. I'm gonna increase the powder in .5 increments until the primer stays in with just a hair of flattening, just like all my other 30-30 rounds.

Can't tell what speed they are at, my chrono is in the shop; back at PACT. Could be real interesting when the new Revelution powder comes out, if it is usable for light weight projectiles.

The target was shot from 50 yards from my hind legs with rifle hung over tree branch. One of the rounds off to the right, I knew was going right. The other...??? My rifle was sighted in for 170's. These shot a little lower.

Hey Drifter, You live where they make those fruitcakes? I got one in the mail today... my brother sends me one every year. Yea I know it's off the topic but I couldn't resist.

Do they really use Stucco in the fruit cakes?

Tried to post some info about an interesting little combination, at least to me, and all I get is fruitcake.

I won't bother yall anymore. I'll just lurk for all the information Ineed.

I have tried those bullets in my '06.
Not much accuracy there, gave up and replaced them w/ some 115 rnfp's @ .311.

What kinda single shot 30/30? I love single shots! If those bullets have a pure lead core with all that lead sticking out I bet they will be real smooshy when they get where there going. What kinda sights? We cant really tell if your doing good or not all that good if we dont know what the gun is or what your looking through.
You know like for all we know this could be a DeHas Miller with a 30x Unertal in 30/30 BR.
Oh that sounds so kewl I want one.

handi rifle with peeps. I don't think I'd run the kinda rig you mention over a tree limb while standing for test purposes.

enuff said.

I've used those in my Contender 30-30AI. Really do a number on jackrabbits even lower velocity than what you are probably getting.

hpdrifter,
I have squirreled away a bunch of the Hornady short jacket bullets, and have been thoroughly impressed with how well they shoot out of my 336 and my 340. I have used data ranging from the high velocity loads I found listed in a load card from a circa 1970's box of these bullets that called high charges of 3031 and IMR 4895, and I have also used pistol powders like 2400 and Unique. I have also used 748 with great results, having extracted data from one of my manuals for this bullet. Like your rifle, my guns have been set up to shoot 170 gr Hornady FP's, and yet all of the short jackets have shot pretty close to POA at 50-75 yards. I don't have the liberty right now to dig out targets for proof, nor find my range notes for actual charges I have used, but I did make an excel spreadsheet from the data card I found in one bullet box. It is listed below: Note that I only extracted the powder data that interested me:

Hope this helps you with your quest to find a good varmint load. Newer boxes of the bullets I have purchased have not contained any data at all. While I have not shot any critters with any of my loads yet, I have no doubt that at short range they'd put a hurtin' on coyote. I have made groups of sub 1" at 50 yards with a scoped Marlin 336.
Maybe later on I can scan the entire data card, and some targets for you to see. I love this little plinkerer.

edit note: I see the 30-30 data and the .308 got meshed together. I hope you can see how the table works...if not, let me know and I will try to get a better chart for you.

Gotta love the 30wcf in a singleshot rifle- it just goes together in a classic way, more than a small game rifle, but not a big bore either-
I read this thread with great interest, as I've discovered I've got 500 of these Hornady short-jacket 30's on the shelf, never opened a box yet-
Two 30wcf rifles in singleshot persuasion- my Martini Cadet w/20" 2groove barrel in 30wcf, and an unfired Savage 24V in 30wcf in the top barrel and 20ga in the bottom.
I shoot the Cadet a lot with cast loads, never tried jacketed in her. Savage is new, unfired, been in the safe for years. I'm thinking I ought to try the Savage out soon, as I also have a new, old stock Lyman receiver sight for her on the shelf.
30wcf to me is sort of a kinder, gentler version of a 45-70 for shorter ranges and plinking without noticeable recoil.
Thinking I'm going to save the data above and work up some light loads for these short-jackets, even if they have that god-awful extra-deep gascheck on 'em!

Now don't get hackled up, the fruitcake side track is also a good topic. Nothing better than a nice piece of real fruitcake while reading the cast boolit forum and discussing a single shot 30-30.

I shot a whole bunch of that little short jacket in a super 14 contender chambered in 30-30. It was really fun to take to the hay field and shoot ground squirrels!

Nine grains or so of 800-X will get you about 1600 fps and similar accuracy.

man everywhere i turn lately i see mo n mo stuff about the ol thuty thuty. i have never given it another look since i stopped using it as a kid but lately im seeing ruger #1's so chamberd and winchester 85 hiwalls also chambered in 30-30 winny.

guess its gotta be a sign for me so i better try to land a rifle chambered for this old cartridge and plan to use boolits in it. i never gave it a second look as i moved up in the power range a ton of years ago but maybe im missing out on a lot of fun.

thanks for this posting and ill also thank you for helping me "NEED" another gun.

hpdrifter the lever-revolution powder is out now. I think it was at Midway I saw it listed.

heres a load i had good luck with using cast bullets for that purpose. It was the lbt 115 rf 32 mag bullet sized to 309 i conventional lubed it when running it through the star and then tumble lubed it and cast it out of 5050 ww/lino air cooled. I used 38 grains of h4895 and got about 2500 fps out of my tc carbine. It showed no signs of leading and would shoot into an 1 1/2 at a 100 yards and puts a hell of a wack on small animals. This load doesnt come from any loading manual so use it at your own risk.

And fruitcakes make mighty fine reactive targets too.
They're great for checking expansion of soft cast bullets, or fragmentation of linotype.
Just don't hit a candied cherry, as they cause nasty ricochets.

Why just last week, my bother reported that they make great hog bait... he caught six in a single trap, and every one was comatose and smelled of rum.

cheers.

I have a rebarreled Highwall in 30-30 and it shoots 170 gr cast accurately enough to be considered a varmint rifle. Load I use is 3031 powder and 170 gr GC boolit.
