Wow. I feel underarmed.

I will be using my Whelen with a 255 grain bullet I designed and carry a 44 Mag as a back-up against those deadly deer. It too will have a bullet that I designed weighing 270 grains.

We didn't get the group buy 434-250 early enough last year for me to work up a hunting load. This was my first custom mould and I've been itching to use it on bambi.

Three trips afield (so far) with 9.3 x 62 and MM 270 ogival flat point at ~1700 FPS.

On deck--44/40 and 200 grain RFN's @ 1100 FPS, 45-70 and Lee 405's @ 1300 FPS, 6.5 x 55 and 140 Partitions @ 2700 FPS--and if I get some time to assemble them, GB 180's in the 357 BisHawk. There's still 3 weeks of season left, I imagine all these will get at least one trip afield.

Lots of different country where I hunt, but the 9.3/270 might be best all around tool of them all--the 286 NosParts @ 2350 FPS print 2.5" higher at 100 yards than the 270 MM's, and are pretty much on the money at 200 yards with that cast boolit sight setting. I won't go much past 125 yards with the castings. The 6.5 x 55 is pretty versatile too, but I REALLY want to use a casting this year. The Swede is for "long range areas".

Junior, mind telling me why you aren't you using the GB 180 FN in the 357? Your article convinced me to buy one of the little Rossis when I find one. TonyDon't mind a-tall. I have about 50 of the loaded RCBS bullets left over from last year, so I want to shoot them before I start using the big ol' group buy bullet. Also, that's the bullet I shot last year when I missed the rockin' chair buck, so me and the bullet want another chance at him.

If you haven't heard the story of the miss, It was just after sunrise on a very cold morning, and the sun was rising behind me as I eased down an old haul road. I was cold, and I spied a patch of sunlight and got in it and stood there relishing the warmth on my back. Suddenly there was a doe standing in the old road about 50 yards ahead. She wasn't legal so I let her pass.

When she ambled away, there suddenly appeared at the edge of the road behind her . . . a rockin' chair. It stepped in the road and became one of the biggest bucks I've ever seen. About 50 yards away.

I raised my Rossi 357 to fire, and the rear peep sight had disappeared. I could see the front, but the rear was only a blur. So I put the front sight on the buck and fired. He jumped across the road and disappeared like my sight.

I was disgusted, to say the least. I always give a deer I've shot (at) a 10 minute bleed-down time before I move. So I stood there in the sun-lit spot and waited. Looked at my rear peep and it looked fine--not invisible at all. Just at the 10 minute mark I looked up and there in the same spot in the edge of the road was a much smaller rocking chair.

By the time I raised the rifle, this new and much smaller buck was in the road. The $%^&*$## rear sight was gone again. I fired anyway. The buck, young and dumb, stood there looking at me. I fired again, still not seeing the rear sight. Well, off after the doe and the big buck the little buck ran. You can't imagine how disgusted I was at myself. Later investigation showed that none of the three bullets impacted flesh. One impacted a leaf a foot or two above the big buck.

When I moved from the sun-lit spot, lo and behold I could see the rear peep sight. The sun rising over my right shoulder had obliterated it when I stood in the sun-lit spot. Next morning at the same time I stood in the same spot and raised a scope-sighted rifle. I could NOT see the scope!!

The moral: don't stand in the sun no matter how cold you are.

Old Ironsights et al . . . tell more about this pistol and some of your results/data with it.
I regret passing on Sout pistol and that only leaves the Buckhunter as a ML Hunting Pistol.
Can one match 44 Mag/45 L Colt loading with it. Say 1000-1200 fps with whatever 50 cal boolit one has?
I have 6 different molds from .490" RB to 370 grain Maxi Ball.
I was hoping to use 250 or 320 REAL if they would work.
Surely it will work at the range I expect to use it.

I've never chrony'd mine, and mine is also a One of 500 first production run (before Traditions bought the design) but it shoots like a champ.

Its favorite load it the 360gr traditional Minnie with between 50 & 80 gr FFF or 7773F.

At 80 gr it has a recoil not unlike my old 6" FA .454., though I would venture the MV is only in the 1000fps range.

Using a sabot & a .44/.45 I have no doubt it could go faster... but why? At Pistol Ranges that 360 is gonna make a mess.

Not to piss off an upstanding member here but what possesses someone to take a shot at a game animal in a non "survival" situation when ya can't see/use your sights?

If you did indeed totally miss that buck you are lucky and if ya shot over the deer where did them boolits go? Unless ya are starving I just don't understand the reckless behavior...

Unless of course that ya practice shooting instinctively at 50 plus yards regularly....

I doubt I'd be tellin that story in public...

I received my special order dies from Lee for my 308 Marlin Express so today I'm going to try to get my TLC311-165-RF up and running in it today. We are at the peak of our rut but the temperature isn't cooperating. The heat index was 100F when I went out yesterday evening and the high temperature is supposed to be 91F today. The doe chasing I'm seeing is under my yard lights in the middle of the night. Oh well.

Heading out to NE oregon tomorrow for white tail; TC .50 cal Maxi-Ball over 90 gr (V) ffg Triple 7 in TC Black Mountain Magnum. Velocity is 1525 fps. Here is a 6 shot group I fired a couple days ago. The rifle had been zero'd for RBs at 50 yards so I needed to rezero at 100 yards with the Maxi at 100 yards. I carry 5 speed loaders so the 6 shots are with one down the barrel and the other 5 from the speedloaders with no cleaning between shots. The 8 o'clock "10" is two holes. After that group I zero'd it POA - POI at 100 yards. Hit's 2" hight at 50. Now If I can just find a white tail.....
