I am shooting a Lee C324-175-1R that drops at .326 in a 24/47 Mauser
Original with iron sights using 16 grains unique.
I am getting out to 500 yards with it, don't know if I am doing any damage but it gets there.
Would I be better off with a larger (heavier) boolit at this range and beyond?

Honestly I have looked at as many posts as possible and there as many different ideas as there are posts

Define "better off". More accurate? Better for hunting? More able to knock over
a steel target?

Right now just shooting steel targets.
But would like to develop loads with different boolit weights for hunting.
Only have the 175 grain 8x57 boolit and was thinking (see I get In trouble doing that) If I needed a diferent mold now would be the time to get it.

For hunting, you aren't going to be stretching 500 yards anyway. What kind of velocities are you getting currently?

A heavier bullet will retain more momentum if you're planning on tipping over steel rams. I like 200gr in my 30-06 as they're far mor reliable on 47# critters than 175gr.

What kind of question is that??? Of course you need another mold! Variety is the spice of life! :D

Beekeeper, Unfortunately there aren't a host of 8mm bullet molds to choose from. The Ly. #323471 is certainly heavy enough, but mine cast no larger than .3235" (I needed .001" more and its smaller bro., -470 cast even smaller.). Then there were 2 Lee Group Buys, the ~230gr. single cav. that 45.2.1 designed and the recent 6 cav. 200gr. bore rider. Both cast large enough and would be ideal for your application, but you'll have to see whether anyone cares to part with one. Custom mold makers are another option.

Might try midsouth for the karibner, mine drops at 0.326 & 235 gr. Do'nt know how it would be for sillywet but plows through everything I've shot it at pp'ed. Should make a fine porky or bambi thumper. vz-24 & cz-23.

................Jim, I take it you're shooting in the military matches at Pala? I need to get down there but it's 175 miles round trip for me :-( BRP Products (BaBore) currently lists a 200 gr silhuette boolit design currently available. I looked around on the Group Buy Discussion area but didn't see anything in 8mm happening. I also checked NOE's list of currently available moulds, but nothing in 8mm. Looks like you need to get with BaBore and snag that 200 gr design.

Several years back I initiated a GB for a heavy 8mm to be done up in a Lee Sc set of blocks.

From common WW(ish) type alloy it ran about 240grs. I was hesitant to post this as I didn't have any cast up or I'd have offered to send you some, however you'd probably be better off with BaBore's 200gr silhuette boolit. So far as I know there isn't an 8mm design anywhere aimed at long range work. Maven mentioned the NLA Lyman 323471 #2 Below:

Which probably would be the best for truly long range work. A desireable mould if you can find one!

After getting that 240gr Lee GB in hand, I felt for some unknown reason that I should be able to get 2300 fps with it, retaining at least good hunting accuracy so I used a Turk M38/46 (Above) I had. I decided to use surplus WC852 (slow) for the powder. I used GREX, ground poly shotgun shot buffer as a case filler from the beginning of the testing.

I did finally achieve the 2300 fps and at that speed it was still maintaining sub 2" 5 shot groups at 50 yards. I was really glad to have the test done as I'd beat myself up pretty well in the course of things. In addition the rifle also managed to crack the stock through the wrist due to recoil :-) Had I used my M38 with it's 29" barrel I could have probably finished up a bit sooner!

My 24/47 Yugo Mauser loves the BRP 200 grn Silhouette slug. It would be money very well spent if you order one for your rifle. BaBore's molds bring new meaning to the word "custom."

Hope this helps, :D

Thanks everyone for your info. Will contact BRP about a mold.

Rick.
Haven't started to shoot match yet. Still in the having a great time wasting ammo phase and getting over the flinch and recoil shock.
Making good progress tho as I am starting to hit the targets more and more.
I am getting a little better each time I go to the range and have observed several matches.

I am getting good shots out to 500 yards but thought the heavier boolit might be better at that distance.
Between this and working with my old BP rifles I am having a ball.Have a couple of guys trying to get me involved in BP sillywet but am not sure about it, Mostly the going in expence.

Thanks again everyone for the info.

..............Yup it is Bill. I owned it several years ago ............... for entirely too long :-) maybe 3 weeks? I don't know what it was intended for but all 4 of the 8x57's I had at the time sprayed it around the countryside with wild abandon.
