Has anybody got any data, or has anybody tried 5744 in a .22 Hornet?

I have a PDF from Accurate Arms On a laptop, for some reason I cannot get it to transfer to my pc.
It shows 8.7grns - 9.7grns with a 40grn for a max of 2208fps
8.1grns - 9.0grns with a 50grn for a max of 1951fps
I no longer have a Hornet, But I do use aa5744 in a lot of stuff.

Thank you! Sounds like 5744 might be the proverbial "slow" powder for use with cast in Hornet loading.

LIL GUN, AA 1680, W296, Alliant 2400 are some of the best choices in my opinion. Hands down LIL Gun for jacketed bullets. AA 1680 is my choice for high performance cast loads, Bullseye or Unique for small game loads.

If you go to RD's website, he has load data for his boolit design. Might be some help.

That mirrors my experience with the .22 Hornet in a Ruger 77/22H a couple of years ago. I did quite a lot of shooting, and came up with the same results.

IIRC, 5744 is almost as bulky as SR4759. You might want to see how much will actually fit into a case. I could NEVER get anywhere near as much 4198 into a case as Lyman listed.
I kind of like a case-full of 4227 behind a 225438 for full throttle. I think it is above current SAAMI pressure specs, though. Doesn't bother my old #3 Ruger, might be rough on some of the rimfire- based actions.

My Handi- Hornet with a 12 twist likes the 225438 with 11.5 grains RL-7. But across the board the only powder with cast bullets I will be loading is AA1680. After shooting almost 2000 rounds with 5 different cast bullets this is what it came down to. The neat thing is with 11.5- 12 grains of AA1680 and all 5 different bullets will shoot very near same POI. No pressure spikes or surprises. BTW, I use small pistol primers, Lee Collet sizer and a light crimp. All will shoot minute of praire dog out to far side of 150 yds. if I do my part sometimes I get lucky and stretch that a ways if the wind cooperates.

Hello, leftiye. I tried AA XMP5744 in my Hornet... I started low & worked up...Nearly every load I tried, even the ones near max., after the first shot, the next was hard going in, or wouldn,t chamber at all...That stuff wasn,t burning completely & leaving powder grains behind....I just remembered..this was using cast bullets, jacketed might boost pressure to overcome this. If you are after a low velocity load, have you tried IMR TrailBoss?

I just bought my first bottle of 5744 a year or so ago, haven't had a chance to burn any in the Hornet yet....I don't shoot it enough I guess.

I looked in my 2002 Accurate Reloaders Guide:

44 grn. RNGC , Starting Charge of 5744: 8.1 grns. 1879 FPS.
Max charge,9.0 grns, 2042 FPS
Cartridge OAL= 1.665"
Primer: CCI-500
Win Cases
24" Barrel "PJ"

Thank y'all, Sounds like maybe the 1680 or RL7 might be betterer?

I have excellent results using RL-7 with "J" boolets, kinda slow on the FPS side, but the accuracy is there for sure !! Never been able to find any AA-1680, and now I see RL-7 has left the shelfs too in this area, I hope it's only temp....."PJ"
