You need to do your search again. I entered "H&R model 155 "Shikari" in 45-70" on Google, and got tons of responses immediately.

I could go measure mine, but 28" IIRC. I think you could also get a 24" barrel too.

Go to Greybeard Outdoors. They have a complete section on these rifles. I own one of these as I purchased it when H&R first made them. They should only be fired with the trapdoor loads as the receivers are not case hardened like the SB 2 receivers of today which are capable of firing any load that is produced. The H&R SB2 Buffalo Classic may even be used for the more powerful long range loads of BPCR. I would advise the use of some sort of recoil reducer when firing these rounds out of a 7 3/4 lb rifle.

I have had 2 of the 45-70s. Sold both but have the 44mag left, it has a shorter barrel. Also have 2 of the older 58cal. Huntsmans.
Recoil with heavy boolits in the 45-70 is substansial.

Could be wrong, but I think they were done in 24 and 28 inch.

Mine is a 24" barrel. Have used #1 Ruger data for years. Works well.

What loads do you shoot in the .58 Huntsman rifles?

I wouldn't use Ruger #1 data.

roverboy, I use 90 grs of Goex FFG with a .575" roundball. These older guns like mine from the 70's have a slow rifling twist and uses #10 percussian caps. One of my 58s has a screwin breechplug, the other has a push in with an o-ring on it. I bought the push-in breech plug rifle new in about 1974.

Using Ruger loads in a Shikari is just begging for a ambulance ride!!!

Shikaris' have a cast iron receiver and don't like that kind of punishment for long. My friend closed up the firing pin hole on one with a 30-30 barrel on it. Ruined the receiver.

The SB2 will take Marlin loads if you can.

When the Shikari model was made there were no SB2 receivers, they were all cast iron. This is one reason they changed the barrel lugs so the new won't fit the old.

My sources say a 28" barrel and keep the loads within Trapdoor Springfield levels.

The shikari 45-70 came with 24 and 28 inch barrels, The 44 was only available with the 24 incher. They all had cast iron frames and a silver soldered underlug. The barrels sometimes fit right up on a newer SB-2 frame (I have one) but the soldered lug limits it to trapdoor level loads. They seem to be as accurate as the newer guns. Respect their limits and they will serve you well, just don't try to make 458 Win out of it.

I tried installing old on new, and new on old and it did not work. There was one post here that said it did, but it would not with my guns.

like was said injoy. the fine old rifle for what it is. be safe and have fun. trapdoor level loads will kill anything in the 50 states and wont beat you to death.

Mine's 28 inch and I agree with the trapdoor levels. Ken Waters' sixth edition (1998) of Pet Loads lists the H&R as a weaker action.

something i don't understand. the .45-70 will stop and kill anything on the north american continet. why do some people have to try to make a mag. out of it?
