I have two 357 Herrett contender barrels, a ten inch and a fourteen inch. They both have a lllllllllllloooooooooooooooonnnnnnnnnnnnnngggggggg gggg throat,
yikes, .4 inches.

Need a design that will work. Any suggestions?

Lyman 358156 might do it. It has two crimp grooves, and you could even set the boolit out a little farther and crimp in the forward lube groove. It is a 160 gr SWC GC.

I could send you a few to try if you're interested.

Cheers

What about 200 grainers?

Take a look at the RCBS 35 cal 200 grainer.

Had one go through my hands a month or so ago in a trade for a reaL nice 4 cav 429421 with the square lube grooves. The deal was done so I had to send it to it's new owner but I did manage to make about 150 before it lft the house just to try it out in my 357 contender barrel

I was very happy with the results and it is long enough for you to try extended seating.

Now I got one more mold to keep an eye open for!

Would you consider rechambering to 35-30/30?

My buddy's 357 Herett has the sam 0.4" freebore. The only boolit that I could get to touch anything was the 358627 sized to 0.360. Seated to the lower CG, it engraves into the throat at the end of the freebore. Not an ideal situation here. A heavier boolit, with full diameter nose would do better, but it takes you into that "too heavy" for cartidge area. He was driving the 627 just acouple grains shy of max jacketed load using H322. 100 yard accuracy was running 1 1/4 to 1 1/2". A far cry from the 3/4 to 7/8" groups using 180 gr Hornady SSP bullets, but adequate for 300 yards on whitetails.

It's been awhile but as recall I used a NEI 220 or 222 bullet for 357 Herrett - don't have the barrel or dies anymore but I think I have the mold - if you wnat I'll look and see about sending some to try.

you could always go to mountainmolds and get exactly or close to it what you want. it is a little more, but doesn't appear to be that much more than the the mold companies listed. and it's actually what it's supposed to be.

I may have to try the 358627.

I was on the mountain molds site and there is not a good solution. It would weigh way too much and I like heavy bullets. I did design a good 215 grain bullet for my Savage 99 in 308 with a .35 free bore after getting bummed about the herrett.

I will play around a little more with the 10" barrel which is my favorite length. I could get a longer neck job but going to any bigger chambering in a 10" barrel isn't ideal.

I have decided to rechamber the 14" Now to dedide the chambering. The 35x30/30 won't work withot going to the AI version. Going to the 35 Remington will not be long enough to deal with the throat issue. I think it will have to be either a 35 Remington rimmed long neck or a 358 Bellm. Am leaning toward the Bellm.

Thanks for the replies.

Am I missing something here?

One thing is that you do not need to crimp in the single shots unless the powder and primer combination require you to do so. If that is the case a change in either of the or both will cure that problem.
I have some 200 gr LBT LFN that you could try. They are set up for a Marlin so the crimp groved is way forward but the bullet has a long front driving band.Being that wour are shooting a single shot you can seat anywhere on the front driving band. You can seat the bullet out to .526 from the case mouth.
If you would like to trysome let me know today and i will cast some up and send.I will be leaving sat on a hunting trip so let me know today.
If so the mold drops at .3615 but can size down to .359 , 3595 or 3605.
This is also a GC bullet.
Thanks

Stop at 200g for your 10" Herrett. I have tried 225 and 250g out to 200 yards with mine and they just dont have enough poop at that range to be worth much.

Stick with 158-200g, with 180g being best weight/speed. The 14" barrel (best T/C length I'm jealous!) may be a completely different animal with the 200-250g.

I havent shot 125g bullets yet but lots of manuals comment against them. I want to try some .356 125g Devistator HPs too see if that could be an option. Jackrabbit/coyote round while filming for my Varmint Team. That little 10" contender is fast to get into action and good to 200 yards with 158+180s.
