I recently had a "new old stock" Norwegian 308 barrel installed on one of my 98 Mauser actions that's going to be another cast boolit gun. I check the overall seating depth and compared it to my 1916 Spanish Mauser and found the Norwegian 98 to have a very short throat or leade, 2.594 vs. 2.706 OAL.

Anyone familiar with this barrel?

I think these were intended for use as range rifles and not intended for general issue, so a tight cut throat may have been to improve accuracy.

Many mauser barrels have a long freebore section compared to most other military bolt actions. This was more as a safety measure than anything else, but it usually adversely affects accuracy depending on the bullet used.
