I just went to a gun show and bought a Leupold M8 Compact 2.5 power scope w/20mm obj. (straight tube). Got what I thought was an outstanding deal.
Thought it looked like it would be an outstanding scope for my #1 .45-70. I checked when I got home and it looked like everything should line up just fine (I was worried with it being compact, it may not fit w/o extensions).
I looked on Leupolds website and they didn't have a thing about the M8 line, so I'm guessing they were discontinued. Anybody know roughly what there worth?
Can anybody tell me anything about the M8 line of Leupys? I load my #1 pretty warm and hope the scope can stand up.
Anything to be aware of when ordering rings? I'm assuming Ruger Mediums?

Thanks !!

Your M - 8 should stand up just fine to about anything you can pull the trigger on.

FWIW, The Leupold M8 2.5x20 & 3x20 scopes are the Gold Standard, in scopes for Dangerous Game Rifles, and MUCH ($$$) in demand by folks with .375H&H & .458 etc rifles.

I installed a leupold 2.5x20 Ultralight scope on my Ruger No.1 9.3x74R with Conetrol base and rings. It's a great sight system. I will be using it on wild boar next week.

These beauties are the class of hunting scopes- tough, built to last, extremely good optics and a warranty to rival RCBS- I wasn't aware the M8 fixed power models are discontinued- if so, I'm going to stock up, 'cause there isn't another fixed power scope I want to use on a hunting rifle.
When I lived in Alaska, you never saw anything other than a Leupold M8, and those rifles weren't chambered for varmint rounds, either!

My #1 in .416 Rigby is 'married' to an M8 Leupold, but it's a 4X. not a 2.5X.

I stopped worrying about 4X at close range after spending a summer in EXTENSIVE practice with my .30-06 M700 ....likely about 400 rounds, out to about the 400-yard mark. The scope was a Weaver K4, and I was going to be READY for my annual NWT moose hunt.

Ready indeed...but I killed my bull at less than forty FEET using that K4, and had no difficulty whatever. Nowadays, variables with bottom-end magnification of 3X or 4X are found on most of my hunting rifles, but I don't foresee a divorce anytime soon in that M8/.416 marriage. They are just too perfectly matched!

Potsy,

I had that very same model scope on my #1 in .45-70, in factory Ruger rings. It worked fine, and the M8 was clear enough that it shot better than should have been possible with 2.5X.
