Goex 'Cartridge' is being discontinued, so starting with Goex 2f is probably a good idea. Buy the Express grade if you can afford it.

depends on the bullet you have but I load my Pedersoli with a lyman 457124 which casts at 400 gr in my mold. For a smokeless load I generally use 27 gr of AA 5744 and for black i put enough powder in the case with a drop tube to give me .25" of Compression with a .030" wad. I seat the bullet with one grease groove showing as this puts the bullet within a couple thousandths of the rifling and shoots best in my rifle.

I should have given more information I want to use smokeless powder and shoot the 405 Shooter's choice cast.
Thanks

Nick nailed it. 27gr AA 5744 works really good in my Pedersoli Sharps with 350 or 405 gr cast bullets. I mostly shoot Ranch Dog's 350gr sized to .460 and I leave off the gas check.

What is the FPS on that load. I've been experimenting with 4759 23 Gr.

Lymans #48 says that 24 grains of SR 4759 gives them 1,258 fps. with a 405 grain
#457193. 26.5 grains is max at 1,415 fps at 17,700 CUP. For trapdoors, and is all you need. Just seat them deep enough that they chamber fully.
I like to use a card wad and dacron filler even with 4759.

OK here is my ignorance again. Just to some up my loading experience. I use to shoot USPA still shoot trap hunted prairie dogs coyotes deer most anything that has to do with shooting at one time or another and loaded the shells to do it. But this is my first time loading the 45-70. What are and where do I get these fillers and wads you mentioned?
Thanks

Buffalo Arms and Sagebrush Ltd sell the wads and fillers.

You might want to rethink your regard for black powder. My shooting partner uses a Pedersolli .45-70 with black to great effect. 70 gr GOEX 2F, felt wad, Hoch 550 grain Creedmoor bullet and Winchester primers gives him 1 to 1.5 minute groups (3" to 3.5"at 300). We have not improved on that with any smokeless load.

Thanks Charlie. This saddens me deeply ...

GOEX is discontinuing the COWBOY and CARTRIDGE grade powder. We have a limited supply and will ship "first-come, first-serve". Until it is gone. Once it is gone, uh, . . we won't ship any more? Oh, right. When it is gone, it is gone. Cie la vie. Sayonara. Adios. Finit. Caput. Listed on the "extinct" list. "So long, it's been good to know ye" and all that.

I'm gonna say it publicly ... I'm really p'ssed at Hodgdon Powders. They buy Goex effective Jan 1, 2010 but they jack up the price of Goex 12% in October 2009, plus Goex's regular need it or not 10% every January - chasing to be equal to Swiss who hasn't moved their prices in a long time ... Thank You James Kirkland

Then they fire Don McDonald and Bill Bagwell, plus I understand the work crew at Minden has been reduced with one or more of the knowledgeable employees let go

Cowboy and Cartridge granulation's is no big deal to process. Every processing step is the same except the Screening Process and they are basically FFq & FFFg mix granulations:
Goex Cartridge – (05-37) 02OC07B
12 mesh – 0.62% retained
14 mesh – 0.03% retained
20 mesh – 97.54% retained
30 mesh – 01.70% retained
Through – 0.11%

Goex Cowboy
20 mesh - 32.9% retained
30 mesh - 64.9% retained
Through - 2.2%
Source: Dutch Bill
Hodgdon is driven by one thing only ... Ka Ching - Ka Ching. And it boils down to they are primarily interested in their Federal Govt Contracts and their Blasting Powder business. Us BP shooters are 2nd Fiddle to their business plan

So, I would suspect gents, if Goex Express is one of your favorite powders ... might want to buy as much as you can store because there are extra steps to this manufacturing process and ... there are less users of Express than there are of Cowboy and Cartridge!

Visited with Jerry at Powder Inc about the Cartridge powder. He said it was the slowest seller of all the Goex powders. So it only makes sense in a sagging business climate to cut out the stuff that's not selling.... It's to bad more people didn't use it, it gives really good accuracy altho it's not a good one for the highvelocity that seems to be what folks think they need...

John Boy, I told you that I was worried about Hodgdon's idea's and what they had in mind for Goex. I think they are doing the classic buy out and then destroy from with in. That would only leave the sick subs that they make to be purchased.
