Ruger #1 FTF issue--maybe solved

Called Ruger as my 375 H&H #1 firing pin protrusion was about .021" longer than the 460 S&W. Unfortunately, the firing pin is a factory fitted item, so gun would have to go back. Decided to pull firing pins from both breechblocks.

Pulled firing pins from both breechblocks to measure. Within .002" of each other. Checked out transfer bars (part that hammer impacts which then impacts firing pin)and they looked OK. Pushed on firing pin on S&W directly and it had plenty of protrusion.:???:

Put both breechblocks back together and put them side by side. Everything looked good EXCEPT for the hole drilled for the transfer bar retaining pin. Was a bit closer to the rear of the block on the S&W, compared with the H&H. About .030" farther to the rear.

I THINK that is the problem with the gun. A mfg. defect with the breechblock. Pivot point is too far to the rear and causes a shortened firing pin protrusion. Might travel the same distance, but range of movement is farther to the rear of the gun.

Will call Ruger, up in New Hampshire, who knows, maybe they will pay for the shipping (yeah, right!!). At least let them know what to look for.

Sounds like you're about to save them a lot of " detective work on a defective rifle."

When you call Newport make sure you ask for a shipping container, and for them to pay for it. They often do both ways, especially if the gun is defective, and it sure sounds like yours is. Most of the customer service folks there are pretty good so give it a try.
