I recently acquired a Remington 788 receiver.

The trigger and bolt are missing.

I have a factory trigger left over ......... but I do need a bolt. A bolt with a broken handle would not scare me off.

This action is the long one ....... I would say the .243/.308 class and it's a right hand.

I forget the smith's name, but he repairs and makes 788 bolts. If you search a bit fo something like "788 bolt repair" his name will come up.

I did the search and will work at it more .....

I'm interested too. I have an old 788 in .223 with a broken and missing bolt handle. I thought about turning a new handle and welding it myself, but want to make sure it's done right.

243 /308 is a short action - not long.

It is not as simple as just putting a bolt into the gun.
The head space has to be checked and set by a real machinist.

Daniel Boone,

The world of 788's runs a little contrary to conventional wisdom.

A .243 or .308 is considered to use short actions.

But with 788's ...... a .243 or .308 only fits in it's long action.

You see, 788's are short and shorter.

Best regards

Update:

I found a used bolt on another forum. What with the scarcity of these, I consider myself very fortunate in finding one for a reasonable price and very quickly.

Maybe I have not been so naughty this year after all!!!!!

As far as I know, Wisners does not build and sell 788 replacement bolts anymore.

I have been told that one should check with Pacific Tool & Gauge for 788's bolts.

Thanks all for your help!!

Mark

I'd do a search, there are plenty of gunsmiths that should be able to fix up a new handle for you.

But as far as replacing the whole bolt assy. ...... Wisners shows it as "discontinued".

Take care Gents, it is the hammering on the bolt handles to open the bolt that destroys them. BvT

I had a 788 in .243. The bolt handle came off after a tap with a rubber mallet (hot load, stuck case). Sent the rifle to Ahlman's. It came back with a Rem 700 bolt handle welded on and they kept the original handle. The work was first rate, but having the wrong bolt handle made the gun look like a$$. Make sure if you send one in for repair, that they are going to weld the ORIGINAL handle back on. I sold that gun for the cost of the repair ($150). Just couldn't stand to look at it. :(:(

I was just going to mention them as a possible source for a bolt. I've found some pretty odd ball stuff that couldn't be found else where. The work I've seen come out of there shop has been top notch, but I agree, replacing the bolt handle with the wrong one and then keeping the original is just wrong.
