I have a W (1963) SC in .30-30 about 95% condition. The Micro-groove barrel has 22 grooves, IIRC and runs .304"x.308". The rear sight is just as you describe on all the older models that I have seen. Regardless of the oversized bore diameter, it still shoots the RCBS 30-180 FN into 2-2.25 MOA. How about a report whenever you get to the range?

I would forget the replacement rear barrel sight:takinWiz: and mount a decent receiver sight instead. This increases your sight radius and allows you to look through the rear and only need to align the front and the target. This is MUCH easier with older eyes.

LongPoint, My face is red as I said a lot for no help at all to you! When you stated W model my mind went to the serial number instead of model number. The bore on the newer models are more correctly .300"x.308" so you shouldn't have any problems with boolits.

If that's not a typo, then they must have changed things over the years. The .30 cal micro-groove barrels that I've seen had more like 11 groves in them.

I've had real good luck in those with the 150-grain Lee RNFP gas checked boolit. 1200fps Unique loads make for a good plinker. 2300fps RE-7 loads make for a good deer round. Both were more accurate than factory ammo for me.

No, not a typo. There has been 3 different types of micro-groove rifleing, 1955-1957 had 16 grooves, 1958-1968 22 grooves, 1969 until now 12 grooves. I have used cast sucessfully in all but the 16 groove barrel of which I have never owned. The 12 groove barrel is tighter bored than the others.
