I'm looking to add another 30 mold to my mold collection. I have a 150 RCBS and a 311291 they both shoot well but I would like to add a heavy weight. I shoot only paper @ 100 and would like to go to 200 yards as well.

What say ye?

Thanks, Longone

You don't mention what you're planning on shooting these " 30's " in. The Lyman 311284 or even better the NOE 311284 would be a great heavy weight at the distances you're speaking of.

If you decide to buy a Lyman 311284, keep a close eye on the nose dia., they run small and will wreck accuracy . If you buy a used Lyman 311284 , might not be a bad idea to find out what the bands mike and the nose is miking before you count out the $$. Read the specs below on the nose dia. of the NOE, perfect in my case.

I am shooting a 03-a3 in 06 and just put together another 06 on a Savage with a Varmint barrel. What do you think of a 311299?

If it will fit.....slug the bore for size vs boolit sizes.

The 311291 does quite well @200 yds in my 03A3. It really likes the NOE K-31 boolit...weighs in around 190gr w/GC.

I use the Lee .30 cal mold for both paper patching, and checking.
I like the 180gn result.
Works for me. I pan lube also.

I would suggest 311299, 311284, Saeco #301 as "heavies". I like the Saeco #315 175gr as a middleweight.

My favorites for poking holes in paper out to 200 yards with 03A3s are RCBS 30-180-SP, Ly 314299 (does better than 311299 for filling the throat), and SAECO #301.

311299 is an excellent "heavy" .30 cal bullet. I prefer it to 311284 in my '06s. BTW; if that 'A3 has a worn bore then the 314299 will probably shoot better as the nose will "fit" better. I have both moulds and prefer the 314299 if it will chamber. Both bullets are also excellent for longer ranges out to 600 yards with the right load.

I slugged the A3 barrel and it comes up 309", I do wonder about the throat because I have to seat the 311291 out pretty far to make contact with the lead. The Savage on the other hand has 1500 j-word bullets through it by me and when seating the 311291 to touch the lands the case neck just about lines up with the crimp groove.

Will the boolit being below the neck/ shoulder junction pose any problems? They are all gas checked boolits.

Thanks, Longone

"Will the boolit being below the neck/ shoulder junction pose any problems? They are all gas checked boolits."

Provided the GCs crimp on and are tight, I have no issues with the GC being below the neck. This also assumes there are filled lube grooves in the neck.

How large are the throats? I size 'em so they're snug in the throats.

I am down to just 2 30s. Both older Lymans. A 311466 for light bullets and a 311284 for heavys. They shoot great in all my 30s.

Man you ask tough questions. I sized them all .309"

How do I measure a throat?

This could be trouble!!!! :)

How large diameter can you load and chamber? Both of my 30-06s, both K31 7.5x55s, and both 30-30s all accept .311", so that's where I size 'em. You need enough clearance so the case can release the bullet, but ideally, snug in the throat. The barrel will do a fine job of sizing the bullets to groove diameter.

OK, now I've got it. Maybe I can try seating some as cast and go from there.

I use the Lee 312-185 sized .311 in my 03-A3 and it works very well. The nose fits into the end of the barrel with slight resistance and when you pull it out you can see marks of light engraving.
I shoot this with a load of International Clays.

Can't go wrong with a 311284, it is time proven. Love mine in HP!

311284, or 311299 might be my choices; probably NOE's if Al has any left.

The above (RCBS #82014) is a 180gr. FP. Shoots nice tight groups at 50yds, and drops from the mould at .3105 which my Mauser 98 loves!!
