Lyman lists a load for the 357 Mag and 4759, why not in the 44 Mag?

I think Speer had some data for SR4759 in the .357 Magnum for the Silhouette crowd; I'll look to see if there is any for the .41 / .44 Magnum. I have used SR4759 and 158-gr cast (10.0 or 11.0 grains I think) in the .357 Magnum with good accuracy, but recoil was beyond "plinker" and there was unburned powder left in the bore; NG for a revolver. Have you checked the rifle or T/C tables for data? Also, the Los Angeles Silhouette Club website might have some loads.

My Speer #11 shows 23.0 4759 as a max load for 240 grn. mag. primer. That was with .429 jackted bullet.

From Speer #11:
240-gr LSWC (plain base) - 13.0 to 14.0 - 797 to 860 fps - CCI300
200-gr JHP - 21.0 to 23.0 - 1245 to 1384 fps - CCI350
240-gr SP, HP - 21.0 to 23.0 - 1235 to 1345 fps - CCI350
Speer case, 10" barrel

From The Complete Guide to Handloading:
.44 Special
215-gr cast - 14.5 - no m/v given
225-gr HP cast - 16.0 - 0.350" seating depth - no m/v given

4759 IMO is a bit slow for either the 357 mag or the 44 mag and to make it worse it is too bulky for their case volumn. It does leave unburnt powder as it is impossible to put enough in the case to bring the pressures up for the powder to work at its best. Even for the 454 casull with a larger case it still doesn't work as well as I would have thought. I assume the 460 S&W would have enough case volumn for it. The 45-70 appreciates this powder as it's case is large enough to work with its bulk.

Thank you Berdan III

I foresee some real possibilities with the 278 and 310 grain boolits in the 10" Contender.

The longer barrel will definitely help as you'll be creating a situation for a more complete burn since the pressures will continue to rise as the bullet travels down the longer barrel. Shorter barrels just can't maximize on the pressure curve of the powder. Combined with the closed chamber of the contender, 4759 may work fairly well for your application.

A thought occurs: there is the .41 Wyoming; a wildcat based on a shortened .220 Swift case and designed to push heavy cast bullets if I remember correctly (can't remember how "shortened" and how heavy). I'll look it up and see if there is any usable information. It may be too much of a good thing, though.

There were no loads listed for SR4759 and the .41 Mag. in Speer.

From The Fouling Shot #72, #139

.41 Wyoming - .220 Swift case shortened to 1.6" - rechambered, rebarreled (1:14" twist) Dan Wesson Super Mag. - for heavy cast bullets, but no load data.

.41 Magnum - SSK 275-41 (as cast weight 300 gr) - 19.0 - WW680 - Fed. case - CCI350 - WW680 - 1189 fps - S&W Model 57, barrel length not given.

If you have access to any of the old DuPont load data brochures you can find load data for 44 magnum and 4759. I tried some and found that in a Marlin carbine it worked well, not so good in a handgun, longer barrel is good, I guess.

I have tried it with 41 Mag with 240gr cast. I didn't even bother to check velocity as accuracy wasn't that good but I think, it would be around 1,000fps out of 4" barrel.
Here is what my record says;
240gr LBT LFN + SR4759 X 16.0gr + WLP = 2.5"@25yds
240gr LBT LFN + H110 X 20.5gr +WLP = 1.5"@25yds
I beleive 16.0gr of SR4759 was casefull (but not compressed) with this bullet.
