45 cal 230 grains 40S&W jacket no triming!

Working on some 45 customer 45 cal dies this weekend. Seems everyone is interested in making 230 grain 45 cal bullets from easy to obtain 40 S&W brass. The challange is that the 40 S&W case is a bit long for the little amount of lead required to equal a 230 grain bullet. One sollution is to simply trim the case but that can be time consuming and members here have found it no fun to add the extra step.

So here is what I recamend, the avarage 40 S&W case is 70 grains so let use use a .358 148 and 158 grain cast boolit for the core. Add a 8mm airsoft BB and my universial notch die and it can make a great 225-235 grain .451 bullet without triming the 40S&W case.

Here is some pics of what I have accomplished.

    Good Shooting & Swage On!

Check out the length of the notch! The new notch die is really working well! Think this is the final design. Your 475s could look like this too, which by the way is still on my mind. I have tracked down a good reamer machinist and will be sending him plans soon for severial new calibers.

Gap in cross cut bullet under BB is from the BB melting during cutting. I am certainly there is no gap in the finished bullet. Of course if you wanted explosive expansion we could add a hollow cavity under the bb

Bullet was split right on the fold of the notches so that is why you see the funky sape to teh tip section too.

What is the object of pin shooting? I imagine exactly as it sounds... nock the pin over? Yep this one is pretty wicked. Those points are sharp too!

BT, are the 8mm soft air BBs that much softer than the 6mm? I can't get the 6mm BBs to take a shape like that.

Yes the "heavy" (.40g I think, equals about 3 grains) 8mm bbs mold just fine. Actually I think I can mold some of the smaller 6mms to but not all of them. I'll have to look into the 6mms a bit.

The white BB insert pictured above was a 6mm, Looks like it molded OK too.

It's to knock 5 or 6 bowling pins off of a table as quickly as possible. A lot of people use regular cast bullets and it you don't hit the pin straight on, it just deflects and knocks the pin over, but not off of the table (it's usually about 2' from the rear edge). Hollowpoints work better, because if you hit the pin on the sides, the pedals on the hollowpoint still catch and spin the pin off the table. Golden Sabers are the best I have found, but I'm sure what you posted above would be even better with those nice big "teeth".

shooting pins using what type of gun? 6 shooter or semi auto? I imagine the teeth may cause feeding concerns in a semi auto but I also imagine the toothed bullet would work very well for nocking them off the table.

There are different categories: Pistol, Revolver and handgun caliber carbine. Actually, there is also teh same for .22LR, but they sit the pins and the rear edge of the table, so you just need to knock them over.

I've never has any feed problems with Golden Sabers or with Hornady XTP. You might need to round the pints with those ones though...

After finishing up the first of 5 customer's 45 cal dies I am really starting to like the look of this 235 grain 45 cal with the airsoft BB HP.

Are you using a different HP punch with the new dies to seat the BB's?

YEP, imagine a bowl forming these instead of the typical cone of the traditional HP.

I can certainly provide this new HP bowl nose punch for anyone interested.

Also FYI, the record at one time I think was 1 and 3/4 seconds for 5 pins knocked off the table,
    using a 45acp.
I saw a video, very impressive. Bowling pins are kinda heavy.
