    Lube for Maxi Balls

I have read some of these threads and don't see a post that specifically asks this question.

What do you guys make your Maxi Ball lube from?

I would think the TC bore butter would be good but it is too runny out of the tube. The pre-lubed Maxi's that TC sells have bore butter on them but it is a firmer type then the tube type.

Can the stuff in the tube be mixed with say, bees wax, Crisco, etc. to firm it up some so it will stay in the grooves better?

    Thanks for your help.

Beeswax and Crisco- 50/50 or 60-40 for warmer weather works well for me. Beeswax mixed with Ballistol is good also. DALE

    Thanks for the reply Dale.

Does either one have a longer shelf life? I would think the Beeswax would last longer but not sure.

Do you guys know any good sources for Beeswax?

    I second Ron.
IT's the easiest and best lube I've ever used.

Dave, I got a .512 Lyman sizing die and put the BPCR lube in my Lyman 4500 and went to town. Just like sizing any other cast bullet.
Try it, you may be a convert also.... LOL!

My recipe is lifted from someone else here on the site

    5:4 beeswax to olive oil.

I just hand apply and let the excess get cut off when loading.

For those that do not want to mix anything up, DO-ALL "Tool Saver" works great and last tube (like a tube of caulking or glue) was about 5 bucks.

Looks a whole lot like some commercial products. Really looks like FWFWL.

    Bpb,
I might have some trouble finding a die for the 54 cal.

Dave, I misread your post. I don't know of a .54 cal die. Maybe someone could make one for you. It still is the slickest way to lube maxi-balls that I have found.

I am heating up the lube in a tin on a old coffee maker. I drop the bullet in and let it get as hot as the lube pull them out and put them on wax paper. When they cool the whole bullet is coverd in a thin layer. The hollow base bullets get tipped on their nose and a drop of lube is dripped into the base. I have had great luck with that.
On my paper patched boolits I am going to try a little dollip BPCR lube into the hollow base on top of the paper when the paper is cold. I want it to be a little grease cookie. I want to try it Just for giggles. Ron

I picked up one of these on ebay, haven't had a chance to use it yet, but it's a pretty nifty looking tool. He's down to his last 50 cal, but I believe he still has several of the 54 cal's left, just have to wait till he lists one.

Yes, I saw this too 243. I sent him a note with no reply yet. Not sure I want to pay $40 for it though.

Some of them have gone cheaper, like in the mid $20s, but I like cool old well made tools and I had to have one.

I believe when I was browsing someone had listing something similar made in plastic that could be had for around $10.

Here it is, except in .45 cal.

    Here's a 54 cal on gunbroker. I don't think T/C makes these anymore.

I make my own lube, pretty much a soft beeswax formula, I pour the lube in a tray or a pan slighty deeper that the lube ring. then I let it cool with the maxi balls in the tray, I use a piece of copper tubing to cut the bullets out of the lube. I only have a 50 cal, so 1/2 pipe works for me.

Same formula and lubing method here. I only lube the bottom grrove. I shoot 350 gr .50 cal MaxiBalls cast of 1-16 alloy at 1525 fps out of a TC Black Mountain Magnum. Excellent accuracy with no leading.

Smile Unless my memory fails me, the reason

Larry Gibson also uses that formulation (5:4 beeswaxlive oil) is because I got it from one of his posts on here or another location on the net.

I just knead it into the lube grooves and let the muzzle trim it. Kinda messy when I do it all afternoon at the range, but for hunting it is no biggie.

Maybe I should start cooking some local juniper in it so the deer will not recognize me as a EVOO fan.
