Yup, seen plenty when changing tires at my shop. They also have stick on weights that are made of some kind of rubberized polymer. Definitely don't want those getting in the smelt pot. Smoke and stink like crazy.

I have spent the last 35 years as a big truck mechanic and we are just now seeing the zinc ones, this puppy is brand new to me. I was thinking the same thing about one sneaking into the pot!! Nasty!!

I believe you are correct, I found one the other day like that. Tap it on something and it had a metallic sound. Got out my knife and started peeling it, there is a metal core. I've been slacking but been meaning to take a magnet and see if it sticks.

I find more and more of the plastic covered steel weights and they come in several different sizes.

Not trying to hi-jack your thread Reddirt62, but how long do you guys think it would take for one of these plastic weights to break down into the earth? 2 or 3 thousand years? Just thinking ya know.

If I understand how this type of thing works, plastics don't really break down in the ground. Organic matter, paper, cardboard, etc will biodegrade and return to the earth.

Plastic, as I have understood it, will photo-degrade in sunlight. Even so, it doesn't break down. Rather, it retains it composition - or continues to be plastic. It may break apart into smaller and smaller pieces, but it is still plastic.

Kind of cool and sad all at the same time when you think about it.

I wonder what happens with glass...

Some plastics are made out of corn, and they are very bio-degradable. At least that's what they tell us all the time. But 1 type of plastic among the hundreds of them isn't to common.

Ive seen them through my shop over the past year. Not to popular of an option yet. Corporate went away with lead a few years back accept for stick ons that I outsource for. The only WW offerings I have now are all steel

Plastic wheel weights are out there and getting more common as is the rubber ones. Our tire supply guy said we will see a caulking tube style weight past at some point. Where you simply just caulk gun on a slither of it. He says it's designed to stick to just about anything but easily scrapped off. Unlike some of the SOWW.

I see the state getting sued over silicosis if this is true. Glass is part sand but is dangerous if you breathe the glass dust or ingest glass particles.

I have found plastic TURDs in my WWs also..More and more Steal and Zinc..I've started separating Zinc to save, at one time I got some good scrape $ out of them. There are a few that make cannon balls out of them also..

Glass- I walked the shores of Lake Superior and found glass, it looked as though it had been sand blasted with no sharp edges, Recycled!
