    .308 165 mould

I have an old Ideal mould in my collection that I can't find in any of the old catalogs. It's a spitzer bullet with a gas check only.......no lube grooves. I've cast bullets with it but I haven't shot any yet. I can text pics to anyone who can help identifying this mould. Thanks!

Thought paper patch until the gas check. How long have you had it? Maybe someone took the lub groves out for powder coating but then that would have to be within the last five years or so.

Lyman used to make special molds to customer specifications and that's the only thing I can think of. No matter how well (or badly) the design was, they'd mill it if you paid for it.

I guess Ideal did the same thing?

That would be a great bullet if gas checked and powder coated. it has a great profile for a match bullet

That's a one-piece ideal mold that has been re-cut for what ever reason. It may have the original mold number on the sprue plate.

I would almost swear I can see where the lube groove was in the pics.

That's gotta be some kind of record right there... having a mold for that long but never shot a bullet from it... <<whew>>

However it got to be in that shape, I think it's beautiful... but if it has looked like that for 40+ years, then my money says somebody converted a mold for paper patching and didn't bother to remove the gas check... or wanted to keep the option of using a check with their paper patches...

I can see it too, lower left picture especially lower block

Then the .308 165 survived SO NICE AND CLEAR, but look at any other lettering on the mold
Look at very top left picture, right above the 308 165, looks like ###217? maybe 219? been peened out

I think it is recut from a different -smaller mold? Not looking for a fight here just saying>>>>>>>>lots questions?

I've cast bullets and installed gas checks and handload some 7.5x55 Swiss ammo but traded the gun before getting a chance to try them out!

    Interesting.
Maybe a time traveler went back to have it made, found it didn't work, went back to return it and couldn't.
Decided to just sell it because he had other stuff he brought back, and didn't have enough room.
