Another HP Interest/Design Thread: .44 Special 180-200 grain SWCHP

Plainbase, short-nosed something like a scaled down 454423? Big cavity to expand at less than 1000fps. Anybody?

Are you thinking about something like the 429360, only modified a little with a larger lube groove and slightly shorter nose, or just scaling down the 452423?

Something ~200 grains or a little more that would expand at 900 fps or so would fit right into my plans.

I've been hunting for the last 7 years with a cavernous 429360 HP. It won't go much below 214 gr. or so. The 452423 won't go that low. I do have a design that meets the 200 gr level.

Something to look at and it will really expands in a 44 Special.

The Lyman 429360 is a problem boolit in a solid which is very difficult to get to shoot halfway well. In a HP it does much better, but is not an ideal thing to work with. I had it already and worked it over to hunt with. Simply something to try that didn't work for anybody else.

Being new, i have a couple questions. To be shot in a 44 Spcl wouldn't it be better at .430 or .429? Why did 45 2.1 have prob.with this bullet

only1asterisk: I have always wanted a bullet like that only with a GC design also. How far from the nose to the lube groove? I would like it .325 or shorter so I could also use it for plinking in the .444 Marlin. .432 is good for me or even .433

Bigger is better. The bullets will be sized before being shot, allowing the shooter to get the proper diameter for his gun. Cast bullets need to be sized to fit the cylinder, not the groove diameter of the barrel.

Why did 45 2.1 have prob.with this bullet?

I can think of a dozen reasonable objections without trying.

In addition, the ogival flatnose also has some benefits. It appears to be based on a proven bullet. The HP cavity can't do anything but improve its balance. It will likely feed better in a carbine. You can get a touch higher velocity at the same pressure vs. the SWC.

When you guys with more knowledge and experience get the details down, I'll be really interested in getting in on this GB.
I have one die for my new 629, it's a Lee 255gr and playing with the alloy gets a variable of 5grs cast weight. I'd love to have a 215-220gr that I could shoot 1350 fps or so.

I certainly would like one of these. I'd almost go for two, just to get one.
I bought 1K of 200gr moly-coated .44 from Billy Bullets and I haven't found a load that would shoot them cleanly at 1,000 fps, 2400 @ 20gr shoots cleanly @ 1345 fps. Maybe if I could cast them in a softer alloy they would obturate better and with the HP they would do everything that I would want.

IF he'll take the job, this will be a MiHec Cramer style mold. It will be less than $100 with the top punch.
